Not sure if it is, but seems like a "bug"

Regarding the "Edit Profile" feature within Preflight
In Preflight its seems that the values only "stick" if I create a new profile and overwrite an existing named profile that is intended for a particular project. "Edit profile" appears to be broken as it changes the given profile to <Custom> before changes can be saved.

I would like to suggest that when a user is editing a profile, (the profile name that is located in the Profile names drop down box) it should not be switching to <Custom> when a change is made so that it can properly be updated and saved. The preset that you are working on should remain and not be switching when an option is modified. When selecting Edit Profile I would expect the profile that I am editing not to switch and remain active while I am making adjustments to options (with the flexibility of doing one or more at a time).

The current editing state requires that I go through the entire list of settings in Preflight and then create a brand new preset or overwrite an existing named profile a new one being created so that the settings will be remembered. It would be more efficient if I could just have the ability to edit one or more values at a time in the profile and have it update by either closing the dialog box or clicking a Save/OK button. This will be more intuitive and efficient to the user. My feeling is that the designers may have intended the "Edit profile" to work this way but somehow ends up disconnecting from the very profile that the user wants to edit.

To recreate these steps in Affinity Publisher v2.0.3 do the following:

  1. In the Preflight panel switch to a Preflight preset profile that you already created
  2. Select "Edit profile" from the (hamburger) menu to the right of the profile name that you want to edit
  3. Position the dialog box so that you can still see profile name within the Preflight panel
  4. In the "Edit Preflight Profile" dialog box select a category that you would like to configure in the left panel of the dialog box
  5. While looking at the name of the profile change one of the options on the right side of the dialog box

You will notice immediately upon making a change in the options that you are no longer editing the profile that you are working on because it switched to <Custom>. This would seem to indicate that this is why the existing profile is not updated. At least thats how I interpret it.

Because of this you will now have to go through all of the categories and set your preferences from scratch rather than just updating ("Edit profile") certain options of the categories that you already saved.

It would be nice if his could be fixed.  Thanks.

Hi, this might fit better into Feedback and Suggestions because I think it's likely working as Serif designed it.

In the normal document model we're using to seeing an existing document being marked as modified, often with an asterisk although Affinity uses [M] in places. With presets, Affinity shows Custom the. moment you modify a preset. But the values of that preset are not lost, it's just modified from that point on. I tested this by creating a preset with unusual settings. Saved it. Then I modified one setting and it changed to Custom. All of the unusual settings remained as is.

But I agree that this doesn't work the way I would expect. The first time I tried it I looked for the Save option - I wanted to edit a preset and just re-save it but each time you want to save your preset you have to type the name to save over it.

It's functional but it's an unusual approach. It's the same for studio presets and likely other presets. Fortunately, I don't change my presets all that often so I've just learned to live with this.

Hi thanks @MikeTO for taking a look at this. Yes it didn't seem to work as expected but I am now able to work with this since I know what to do now. Thanks for your observations. I understood what you meant regarding presets saved in other parts of the program. When closing a dialog with an X , a program would usually ask if you want to save the settings or not. So yes it looks as if it is by design.

The way I am working with it now is that whatever preset I want to edit, I select the preset in question and make adjustments.  Any adjustments made will put those changes into a "<custom>" mode phase (no longer the named preset with settings as before), where I will then be able to make a decision to "create preset..."  to save as a new preset name or override the existing preset using the same name.

Thanks
