Can only paint in black and white

For some reason I can only recolor and paint in black and white. Nothing I do seems to allow me to select a different color. I think its because Affinity Photo is only letting me use different hues that are already present. What can I do?

Your screenshot shows that the colour format of the image is identified as ‘Greyscale D50’. You need to convert it to colour via the ‘Convert Format/ICC Profile...’ option on the Document menu.
