Hi there (and thanks front up for help and info),

Affinity Photo fails to start (running in the morning, hang up on starting in the afternoon) - System is win 10 pro on hp elite x2 1012 g1 running for over a year parallel to mac installation.

I did not see any windows update over the day. Are there any changes at affinity licensing? Can't I run mac and win parallel?

(I already reinstalled affinity updating and downgrading with cleaning registry - no changes.)

Help and info is highly appreciated

Michael

Hi @Michael Gassner,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums :)

I've never heard of this being reported previously, it's certainly a strange sounding issue!
Affinity is not 'time aware', so it will likely be something local to your machine changing from the morning when the app can run, to the afternoon when the app is unable to.

When you try to launch the app in the afternoon, do you see any error messages or crash reports on screen?

Running Affinity on a Mac using a Mac license will not affect the Windows installation, they are completely separate - so as above this is likely due to another application or service on your Windows machine that runs at a certain time, affecting Affinity on Windows.

I'd like to request a copy of your event viewer log, as I hope this may provide further insight into the cause of this.

1. Open Windows Run (Windows Key + R) and type the following - eventvwr 2. In the window that opens, select the Windows Logs drop-down list on the left and then Applications 3. With the Applications logs selected, navigate to the right side of the window and select Save All Events As... and save them as .evtx (the default option). 4. Attach this saved file to your reply here. Many thanks in advance!

Hi Dan,

thanks for your immediate reply.

There were no messages and there was no actual crash. The start screen from affinity showed up, the program seems to load, but then did not stop loading and was not answering anymore. That was all.

evtx file(8.1 MB) is unfortunately not attached. Failure -200 ... ist there a different way to get the file to you?

Many thanks for your help:-)

All the best

Many thanks for providing this file Micheal and my apologies you had trouble uploading this!

I can see some errors, followed by some strange events which I've never seen previously.

Firstly, the application shows the following error when closing-

So I'd like to check the 'Security and Maintenance' control panel, as mentioned in the above error code. If you open the Start menu and type 'Security and Maintenance', you should see the following dialog -

Do you have anything listed under 'Review recent messages and resolve problems'?

As following the above error in your event viewer log, I can see the MSI service (which Windows uses to install/uninstall applications) is started, and according to this Windows uninstalls Affinity Photo from your PC, then shortly after reinstalls the app!

Again, I've never seen this happening previously - do you have any third party software which is backing up and restoring your PC regularly? This may explain the difference in behaviour based on the time of day, as if you have an application set to backup / restore at a certain time, the app may work prior to this and then not open post.

Many thanks in advance for any further information you can provide :)

Thank you, Dan. This checking would be way above my knowledge.

It seems, that I can't upload from my mac, so I check the win-pc ... which works perfectly fine.

But I fear there is nothing in the recent messages. Or do I need to dig deeper somehow?

The unusual behavior of my machine you mentioned, I think, was myself: I uninstalled and reinstalled different versions of affinity photo to check, whether an older/newer one perhaps is running. But none of them did: 1.09, 1.10.1 and x.4. So I gave up and landed in the forum;-)

Inbetween I downloaded IObit Uninstaller to get rid of the registry entrances to install affinity from scratch. But it did not help either.

As I remember it, I worked on sunday first on the win machine, which I prefer, but its a bit lame, then went to the mac, because of speed, but after a while went back to win, which then just would not start anymore. In all cases I worked on external hard drives using the same files.

If there is anything I can do to shed some light on the problem, please let me know. And many thanks again!

Hallo Dan,

I tryed to start AP just this minute to see, whether anything changed ... and it runs again. (Before I went to this forum I read several postings about AP not starting. One was close to my problem - something on the machine changed - maybe win update or so - AP stopped working and after a while - maybe next update - it went on running.

I made some minor changes to a pic, closed the programm, startet again - it seems to run as it should.

So 1000 thanks and sorry for the hassle. If I can help finding out what caused the problem, please let me know. I am absolutely interested to solve the issue, cause it can happen again as mysterious it is ...

That's great to hear, many thanks for letting me know!

Certainly strange behaviour, but hopefully this issue does not return - please let us know here if you have any further trouble :)
