Editing same Designer files with iPad and MacOS

I have been creating files using iPad for a couple of years and now have a Mac Mini that I have licensed Designer for. After editing the Designer files with the Mac version, I am unable to see changes on my iPad. I’m clearly doing something wrong here, what is the right way to get this working … ie being able to access, edit Designer files with both the iPad app and MacOS app?

On further exploration I can see changes if I “import from iCloud” but not if I “open from iCloud”. I want to edit in place, not create new versions from a base file.

Ok, I think I have figured this out. I needed to “close” via the hamburger menu on the iPad. After doing that I could “open from iCloud” and it indeed opened the correct file.
