PeterH Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Hi. I've been working on a client logo and need to make an .svg file suitable for use on the web. When I export from Designer the resulting file is 255kb which really is too large for web use. By comparison, Illustrator makes a file about 5kb. The document is entirely vector lines and curves with flat colour fills, no gradients or images or fonts involved. I'm not a fan of Illustrator and am trying to do as much work as poss in Affinity, so I'm wondering if I should be doing something particular when exporting as svg for web. Quote
JFisher Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Hi PeterHThis has been mentioned recently and there's a reply from MattP suggesting this will be looked into. Check out the thread here. Your issue maybe similar. J Quote
PeterH Posted December 13, 2015 Author Posted December 13, 2015 J, thanks for pointing me to the explanation. I did as suggested, changing all joins to rounded, and the exported svg file size reduces dramatically - down from 255kb to 4.5kb. This makes afd a useable tool for web svg's. The logo in question only has paths and fills, there are no strokes, so the issue of bevels is not a problem, but I can imagine many cases where you'd want a long pointy sharp join on a stroked path, without rounding or bevel, and in that case it seems that afd wouldn't be a practical tool for making an svg for web use. As MattP mentions, the user really shouldn't have to worry about that workaround - it's just one more thing to have to remember, so I hope they can resolve the issue in a future update (and make this great software even better).
