  1. J, thanks for pointing me to the explanation. I did as suggested, changing all joins to rounded, and the exported svg file size reduces dramatically - down from 255kb to 4.5kb. This makes afd a useable tool for web svg's. The logo in question only has paths and fills, there are no strokes, so the issue of bevels is not a problem, but I can imagine many cases where you'd want a long pointy sharp join on a stroked path, without rounding or bevel, and in that case it seems that afd wouldn't be a practical tool for making an svg for web use. As MattP mentions, the user really shouldn't have to worry about that workaround - it's just one more thing to have to remember, so I hope they can resolve the issue in a future update (and make this great software even better).
  2. Hi. I've been working on a client logo and need to make an .svg file suitable for use on the web. When I export from Designer the resulting file is 255kb which really is too large for web use. By comparison, Illustrator makes a file about 5kb. The document is entirely vector lines and curves with flat colour fills, no gradients or images or fonts involved. I'm not a fan of Illustrator and am trying to do as much work as poss in Affinity, so I'm wondering if I should be doing something particular when exporting as svg for web.
  3. Thanks for fast reply - your tip solved the problem. I don't think that feature is intuitively executed - I wouldn't have found that control without coming to the forum. Perhaps it could be off by default instead of on.
  4. After creating or editing shapes in Designer they continue to show a magenta line even when deselected. Occasionally shapes will show only with their correct outline weight and colour, but mostly they continue to have the residual magenta outline. I have 'Vector' view mode selected. It's very distracting and I can't find a way to view the illustration as intended, e.g. shapes at the back which should be partly covered by filled shapes above them, continue to show as though they're at the top level. Is there a way to control this behaviour?
  5. OK, thanks. This was a feature I used frequently in Freehand, so am looking forward to it appearing in Affinity
  6. Not sure I can describe clearly what I'm asking: I can't find a tool in Designer to turn a shape as though it's in 3D. I'm accustomed to Freehand and there was a tool there that allowed you to turn a shape in any direction, not just rotate it in flat 2D. Is there such a possibility in Designer?
  7. The problem is related to choosing 'Selection with background'. I don't have the experience in AD to know exactly how that works but I imagine the exported doc size will be related to whatever selection you have activated in your document when you go to 'Export'. The procedure I described in my previous post assumed that you would export 'Whole document'.
  8. Hi. I'm newish to Af Designer and was curious about your problem so created a simple document, dimensions in px, with just a rectangle of colour occupying the whole doc. 2688x1091px. I went to 'File' > 'Export' and there selected jpeg as the export format. The width field (the first field in my window) showed the current doc width of 2688px. In there I typed 900 and hit the tab key to take me to the next field. Seeing as the padlock symbol was showing as closed, the height was automatically calculated to be 365px. I hit 'Export' and a jpeg doc was created with the dimensions 900x365. The process couldn't have been simpler and it's hard to see where your error could be occurring. Have you checked that the padlock symbol is definitely closed when you key in the width of your export?
  9. Thanks MelG, that's exactly what I had been hunting for. I wonder if an Affinity person will come in about my main question?
  10. I have images with a white background, r255 g255 b255. When I export them, downsampled, bicubic, as jpeg at a low quality (20) there is a subtle change in the b/g from white to r252 g252 b252. It is enough to notice the difference where the image sits on the white b/g of a web page, so the rectangle of the image can just be perceived. If I export to jpeg at maximum quality it improves to show the white b/g as r255 g255 b254. When I try the same operation in Photoshop (at 20 quality) the same effect is visible though the white background suffers less of a change (r254 g254 b254). Is there a way to ensure that white remains white when exporting to jpeg at low quality? On a related note, I can't find a tool within Affinity Photo that will show me colour measurements as I pass the cursor over images.
  11. Sorry to clutter up the forum with my last question. I found a previous post that explains to add .fh11 to the file name. Seems to work sort of.
  12. That worked very well - thanks for the tip. I still need practice in understanding layers in Affinity. I have a lot of legacy Freehand docs which occasionally need modifying so I guess it means a little bit of extra work but it beats having to battle with Illustrator. I notice that I can't open Freehand files directly but must go back and export them as .eps or .ai first - is that right?
  13. The file is Affinity Designer, though it wasn't originally created in this software. Maybe that is the problem? I think the document was originally Freehand, then exported as .eps, then opened in Affinity Designer. Here's a part of the file (edited down for anonymity) which exhibits the problem. It's as though the shapes were grouped or pasted inside another rectangle. Its not possible (or at least I can't see how) to select only some of the objects by dragging a marquee. I have to use the Node tool while holding Cmd and Shift (on a Mac). SocEspOnly-grey.afdesign
  14. Hi. I have a line of text converted to paths. Each letter is an individual object. When I want to select all the individual letters so as to change the fill colour on all, I drag a marquee over them, but then choosing a fill colour will colour the overall background of the marqueed rectangle, not the fill of each individual item. If I select each item using by clicking while holding down the shift key I can then colour their fills, but it's a chore to do that each time. It would be much quicker to just draw a marquee over all the items. What am I missing?
  15. Hi. I'm currently using OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. I know that Affinity will not run on this version but I'd like to download it at the offer price for use in the near future when I upgrade to Mavericks or Yosemite. The Apple appstore detects my connection with Snow Leopard and will not permit the purchase. Is there a way to purchase and download the app onto 10.6.8 and save it, uninstalled, for future use?
