When I copy an image flattened and then use new from clipboard to paste in a new window, the dpi drops to 96, typically from 350. I'd expect it to stay the same. Is there something in Preferences I've missed?

What you may have missed can be explained on the following website:

Image Resolution 72ppi vs 96ppi vs 300ppi

Since you stated that the dpi drops to 96, I think I can safely assume you're running Windows, correct? If you're on a Mac that would be 72. Blame it all on Apple. ;)

I think that when you Copy an image to your clipboard, it must use the standard computer image resolution for screens/monitors. So Paste from Clipboard would have that 72 or 96 ppi resolution.
