Global Colors with Pixel Brushes

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a workflow that makes use of maintaining global colors when using pixel brushes? I was really hoping that the process would be easy, but it takes a little hacking to get it to work. If anyone has an easier method, I'd be happy to hear it!

Goal:
Have pixel brushes change colors when Global Swatches are edited. Also be able to select them when using Select Same Fill Color.

Solution:
Convert Pixel Layer to a Mask. Mask over a shape with assigned Global Swatch. Put the described combo inside of a clipping mask.

This is ridiculously cumbersome. Having to switch back and forth between personas is a little annoying, but I think with a little practice, I wont have to think about it. It did take me awhile to figure out how the pixel masks work and I still don't think I completely understand them.

A second screenshot with a quick editing of the global colors:

Slightly easier:

  • add a rectangular shape per global color, and assign one of the colors.
  • add a pixel layer and nest it in masking position.
  • you can now paint on pixel layer with any color, or erase. Opacity is king.
  • if desired, create multiple smaller layers like this.

The Pixel layer acts as mask.

Can I get a screenshot of the layers? EDIT: nvm. I got it, thanks!
