Something I'd like to see in Designer: When you need to use a tool that requires a raster layer to work, if there is no existing raster layer, activating the tool creates one. I've been caught every once in a while trying to do something and realizing that I need a raster layer in order to use the tool.

Granted, with experience, I'll learn to check and create a raster layer when needed, but having this automated would speed up the workflow.

Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind if there was no distinction between raster and vector layers and they were all just "layers". I realize there are probably good and necessary reasons for it, but I had a hard time getting my head around the idea at first.
