Publisher Anchor Nesting Issue

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I have a document I'm writing in Affinity Publisher.  The document contains 3 levels of Headings and I have created text styles for each of them.  Each of my styles inherits from "Base" and has the appropriate "Next Level" set to the next text style in the hierarchy, so:

Heading 1; Based on Base; Next Level Heading 2

Heading 2; Based on Base; Next Level Heading 3

Heading 3; Based on Base; Next Level [No Style]

My issue is with generating my table of contents.  Whenever I generate the table of contents, Publisher creates Anchors for me as expected but does not properly nest the anchors according to my "Next Level" setting.  For example, I end up with a hierarchy like:

Heading 1

-- Heading 2

-- Heading 2

Heading 3

Heading 3

-- Heading 1

-- -- Heading 2

Heading 1

-- Heading 2

Heading 1

-- Heading 2 (heading 3s should all appear under this)

-- Heading 2

As you can see, the main issue is with the Heading 3 styles; I have 2 of them in the document total and it places one of them at the top level with no children, and it places the other one at the top level with the Heading 1 style that comes after it as a child, when really both of these Heading 3's should be appearing under the 2nd to last Heading 2.

I apologies if this is confusing, I tried to demonstrate the issue as best I could!  Any help would be appreciated.

Of course, as soon as I wrote this I went back into Publisher to try clicking around and exploring what might be the issue and immediately found the problem!  As it turns out, I had modified the text style for the TOC text styles to ensure my 3 levels of heading were properly indented, however I did not realize I also needed to set the indent level of the styles themselves in the TOC panel!  As soon as I changed my custom-created "Heading 3" to have an Indent Level of 3 in the TOC panel, the anchors immediately updated and all became right in the world!

Leaving the post in case someone else finds this useful.  Or mods feel free to delete if you prefer!
