Smart Object - What am I doing wrong?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am new to this and don't understand what I am doing wrong.  I have downloaded two or three business card mockups in PSD format.  The mockups show round cornered business cards which is what I need.

When I open the PSD in either Photo or Designer I see all the layers including the layer used for the demo content on the mockup.  When I look at that layer the image used has square corners which I presume bleed off the rounded corner layer but the finished mockup displays the card perfectly as a round cornered card.

When I select the smart object layer and replace the existing square cornered image with my square cornered artwork image for the card, it replaces ok in the mockup but with the overlapping square corners.

What am I doing wrong please and what do I need to do for my image to be contained within the round cornered layer?

Thank you for any assistance

Can you upload one of them or are they paid for?

Well those Photoshop PSD files aren't parsed in always in the same manner in Affinity, meaning some layers you see then in Affinity doesn't behave the same way as in Photoshop via smart objects here.

That layer image has transparency, meaning just the circle, lines and text are visable inside the rect area, the rest of the rect is transparent.

Is your square cornered image transparent on it's background? If not make your seperate image background transparent and save that as a PNG file, then place it and arrange/skew/rotate it so it fits on the card layer.

If you use an image which is on a white background it should work and you get rounded corners

That is because, the Vector Smart Object copy 4 Layer has a blend mode of Multiply which is what is cutting out the white corners in the sample business card supplied. But that only works with a white business card.

The mock up also comes with another dark image which if you use that one you have to change the Multiply blend mode to Darken and switch the Light Backgrounds (pixel) Layer off

So, it looks like the mock-up was designed just to produce business cards with white or (a specific) dark background in order to get rounded corners

OK, thank you both.  I am going to have to hold my hands up and just say I don't understand this.  I think for now I will be better of saving myself hours and using something like placeit.com to create some mockups and then start following some training video tutorials so I start to learn and understand how this all works.

Maybe you should look at some tutorials about reusing PSD mockups in Affinity and how to create mockups with the Affinity apps. There are also reusable Affinity format mockups on the net.

Here is an easy one to play around with (a PSD converted to Affinity one).

It might be easier for you to do it in Affinity Photo, since there you can better perspective warp the front and back card images.

  • Create your front and back rounded card layout on a transparent background
  • place your grouped card layer designs then into the indicated positions
  • resize/rescale and warp/rotate your card images to the needed shown example image sizes/orientation, so they fit on top of what is shown there
  • reuse the shown FX effects settings, or create/apply your own

I am such a numpty at this.

I have your file, I have my square cornered artwork file/image and I can't even figure out how I can apply rounded corners to it and match what you have done on your card so it fits!
