Substract shape from itself?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

in Photoshop and there is a function to substract a form by itself.

Thats very handy when you want to create a frame: just add a rectange and substract it - makes an instant frame.

I am trying to do the same in Designer, do you know a way?

Hi @Yodel
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
There's no similar functionality but you can get the same result using compounds. Draw a rectangle with the same dimensions as the document/canvas, draw the ellipse/circle then select both, press and hold alt and perform a subtract boolean operation (menu Layer > Geometry > Subtract or by using the respective icons in the main toolbar). You will get a compound object which you can expand in the Layers panel clicking the arrow on the left of the compound layer thumbnail to access and edit the original vector objects used to create the compound. You can add more objects to the compound layer in the Layers panel and change their respective booleans operations there too.
