I use both Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer on my first-gen iPad Pro. Most of the time they work great. But I must be doing something wrong because I have a very obvious problem that no one else seems to complain about, so it sounds like user error. If I simply open a photo—any photo, JPEG or RAW—in Affinity Photo, it looks beautiful. Full resolution, no weird borders. Same thing if I ‘place’ a JPEG photo in Photo or Designer: image looks great, no extraneous borders. However, if I try to ‘place’ a RAW photo (Nikon D7000) in either Designer or Photo, I get this very low resolution, highly pixelated image with black borders on the top & bottom. It’s almost as if the Affinity apps are grabbing a low resolution thumbnail instead of the actual file. Do I accidentally have some setting in place that inserts thumbnails or tries to save space or something? Any help is appreciated.

OK, as long as your document isn’t too complex, there’s a simple workaround. The artboard addition isn’t terminal. 1. Go in and select everything but the artboard itself, then copy it to the clipboard (not sure what the limit is? Is there a warning if you exceed it?). 2. Delete the artboard(s). The document retains the size of the last artboard deleted. 3. Paste everything back in (but still no artboard). 4. Add/change bleeds to your heart’s content. They work! 5. Optional: add back in the artboard(s).

Oops. I’m running the iOS (iPadOS) 13.1 beta, so I guess this should be in another forum. But I’ve searched and found similar problems with bleeds on iOS 12, so I don’t think it’s the beta causing problems.

I’m am new to bleeds, so maybe I’m doing something wrong, but… If I create a new document in Designer for iPad, and in the document setup dialog I don’t create an artboard, then once the document is created, I can select Bleed from the document menu and add & change bleeds on any side. If, however, I create a new document and select Artboard in the document setup dialog, then once the document is created, I select Bleed from the Document menu, I get the options to view & create bleeds, but they don’t show up. Also, the Include Bleed option is disabled on PDF Export. Likewise, if I create a document without artboards, and then add a bleed (say, on just 2 sides), it works fine, but once I selecte Document—>Artboards and add an artboard, I can no longer add or edit the existing bleeds. Are bleeds meant to work with artboards? Can different artboards within a single document have different bleeds? (I’m guessing not.) Thanks.

I can add assets, categories, & subcategories, and delete an entire subcategory, but no way that I can tell to delete a single asset. Is it possible? Also, there’s no way to copy or move assets between subcategories?

It would be nice if, on the opening screen where Designer lists your files, you could tap on the 3-bar icon in the lower right corner of each image, and 2 additional menu items would pop up: 1. File info (or File Details). This would list information like file size, location, format, color mode, etc. 2. Show in Files. This would open the Files app and open the folder that the file is located in. As it stands today, you have no idea where a file is located unless you hit Save, and then you have just a millisecond or two to read the filename. Thanks.

Does the Files app recognize it as an Affinity Photo Document? Tap-and-hold on the filename and then choose Info from the popup menu. Does it show it like this, with a thumbnail and correct file type?

I know, right? How tantalizing! #everybodyswaitingfordesigner Back to the Photo beta… THANK YOU for the integration with the Files app! After some testing, it looks like Photo is slightly different from most apps that use the Files app. In Affinity Photo, it creates a linked copy to the original document. You can edit it all you want, and those edits are saved to local storage (so you can kill the app, but the changes are still there), but only on the linked copy. The original document in the Files app is unchanged—but still linked, so if you tap on it in Files, then the modified copy is opened in Photo. If you tap the little 3-bar menu in Photo’s files window, you can Close or Save the document. If you Close without saving, you lose all your changes. If you Save, then your changes are copied back into the Files app (iCloud). If you then Close the file, your changes have already been saved out to iCloud so you’re OK. That’s an interesting workflow, although the duplication (locally cached copy) is unusual. Is this the final implementation? I wonder if users would get confused that their changes aren’t save to iCloud until they click Save in the little menu. In any case, it all seems to work perfectly, except for one thing. The Files app’s thumbnails are never updated, even when you click Save. This is presumably a known issue and will be fixed eventually? Thanks for this great integration.

Thanks for the explanations. Solo-ing is definitely nice to have. Lock Selection is fine, but I wish there were a way to lock a layer to prevent any accidental editing, especially in a painting app (it’s less necessary in a vector app, since you can select and move whatever you added by mistake).

What does the new Solo button do, on Layer Options? It seems to temporarily hide any other layers. It doesn’t seem to be documented in Help, yet. Also, Help states that the Lock button prevents editing —but really it just prevents moving/transforming a layer, right? You can still edit it. Thanks.

Oh, I see, Marco. Thanks. So I tried drag-&-drop, editing it, Save, then Close. It doesn’t update the thumbnail in the Files app, and if I just tap on it in the Files app, I get an error message when Photo tries to copy/open it. If I then drag-&-drop it again, my edits are there and it opens fine. I’m glad this is being worked on, but yes it’s not quite there yet. Seamless integration with the Files app is my #1 feature request for any Affinity app on iOS.

All it seems to do is copy it to the private Affinity Photo files location. It doesn’t save it back in the Files app where I opened it. Note, however, that I’m using iOS 11.2 beta on an original 12.9˝ iPad Pro.
