I've read all the apologists about a 'maybe later' IDML import. Unfortunately I (and a couple of other book designers I spoke to) don't want to keep 2 tools around for publishing: it's inefficient. And, for us, the single missing feature in Publisher is an import feature for documents created in the software against which Serif is trying to compete (and against which they actively market with their 'no subscription' mantra).

Serif know who their competitors are. For us to accept that they failed to position themselves as a viable upgrade is silly. Few professional designers can afford to make a wholesale change to their workflow without the ability to reuse and update old projects.

To head things off at the pass: I did attempt to import a few PDFs but the imports were quirky at best - and unusable in many instances. Orphaned lines of text within paragraphs, odd page sizes, unlinked text frames...basically impractical for anything beyond a flyer or poster. And doing a copy/paste from INDD is fraught with possible problems - such as the day INDD stops working with MacOS (and that day is coming).

I completed 5 book projects since Affinity released Publisher and could not, in good conscience, produce any of them in a software that may not make it into widespread production. Affinity must set Publisher up to directly compete with INDD and part of that is the ability to import--and create--interchange formats.

I updated the beta again today in hopes the IDML import feature would have been implemented since the last time I looked. After a test I ultimately deleted the app.

I'll look at it again when Serif announces IDML import functionality (with a comparable interchange export functionality). Hopefully CS6 won't stop working with a future Mac update or I'll be going back to Quark (who added IDML import late last year). If I incur the significant one-time cost to move to Quark I will have little reason to consider Affinity Publisher for a very, very long time.

Use the tools you need, it doesn't mean Publisher isn't good enough for other people.

You may have problems with pdf's generated from InDesign if they are Printed as pdf vrs Exported. Recently I had a slew of InDesign generated pdf files that were not editable in any program because the font's did not embed in a way they could be edited. Characters missing, leading issues, character spacing errors, text blocks scrambled and not continuous. Adobe seems to be blocking many new fonts from Typekit from being fully embedded. I any case I highly recommend testing first before you retire the old files. There is a good chance that some may need to be recreated anyways.

As far as Affinity having the import option for InDesign it is highly unlikely, Affinity is not going to even import PagePlus files which leaves many of us stuck. I wish they would reconsider and come up with a converter or import option. Marketing wise it would make the transition to Affinity line or products more enticing but with the lack of legacy support they will simply lose a good portion of their customer base that have legacy files they need to access.

Because of the newly adopted file format.

"Dead in the water" is a bit melodramatic. I constantly have state this, alternative does not mean competitor. Never once have the good people touted their software as a feature to feature replacement of Adobe's products. Goals and objectives are different in very organization, they may just be looking for a piece of the pie not the whole  bakery. There are many many persons in the field that it will suit their needs just fine. Frankly expecting a $50 (US) one time purchase software to match a $600(US) Per year subscription base feature for feature is a tad unrealistic.

PDF's are mainly used for output and transport to a printing facility. This was stated by Adobe quite clearly. If you want to save all settings, you should save in the appropriate format. This goes for the Affinity trinity as well. If you convert, some settings are lost!

Call me odd, but I actually don't like the new loading splash. Not that I particularly like the old fluffy cloud either. If I were in charge (which obviously I'm not) I would take design cues from the Jetbrain splash screens - each revision gets a new 'fresh' design and also has a small loading bar to show progress if things are taking longer than anticipated. For example:

    image.png.650f8e04e30da6304711e9dff2125fe2.png

    image.png.403904186ff8068ecceed48753f4ac4e.png

Just two pennies worth! No more no less ;) Feel free to ignore :)

Release is great though, can I purchase it soon please before the new tax year starts, I need to get rid of some cash!

Splash screen is not important! I don't work with it or can't make pages with it. So, in short: nothing to worry about.

    Hi Chris_K

Checked log, got this - see attached. But AP was installed from download folder - I think. Is there some way to check?

    error.jpg

You get that screen if there is something wrong with Windows installer. You might want to fix that first.

    download link for fix...

    Hey Tourmaline,

ah yes, I heard of Suitcase. I only got FontExplorer at work and FontBase at home so far.
Suitcase (and FontExplorer as well) though need to be bought after the trial period whereas FontBase is free.

I’m gonna try the Suitcase demo for a few days now. :10_wink:
Do you have any experiences with auto-activation and Affinity products?

    Cheers
    MrDoodlezz

Edit: Unfortunately I can’t even try the demo – it requires the latest Mac OS which I can’t run on my machine yet. Oh well. :7_sweat_smile:

With application sets you can make a set that will be activated for that specific application. So you can make a set of fonts specifaclly for affinity designer for a certain project and activate those fonts in suitcase fusion. It's the next best thing next to auto-activation.

Auto activation only for some Adobe products.

But there is a workaround build in for programs that can't be used with auto activation, so it is still quite simple to activate fonts.

I use it for years now and the latest version is very fast and well designed UI. It's one of the best font managers out there.

I put in a request to support the affinity products for auto activation a long time ago, so, who knows.

As there is no special group for Publisher requests I write here and hope to be read.

After finnishing a book in Publisher it would be nice to have a feature where I can publish the book as a flip book on my web page. Compare how you can brows a book at Blurb an similar print on demand book sites.

Now I can make the book as a pdf, but that will not be as elegant to look at as a flip book.

    Regards Hans

There are specilized programs for this to turn a pdf into a flipbook and post on a website.

    here are a few:

    Hi mkdm

You may have missed the text on our website or other release material, but these personas are intentionally disabled as they required 1.7 verision of Designer and Photo to be installed which will not be available until later on in the beta phase

    Cheers

    Thanks.

Was wondering the same thing, but this explains it all.

Only the 1.7 updates will be Publisher compatible.

Mmm - heartily aware of that, but really looking for a response from Affinity as to if this feature is on the horizon and in the various conversations that have drifted around this, any word from Affinity has been absent since last summer. Some sense of timescale (this month/season/year etc) would be helpful: both versions of Affinity lie unused by me, because of this particular feature absence.

In preferences---UserInterface you can tick "show always crosshair. I recon if you don't tick it, you won't see a crosshair?!

Have you tried redoing the download?

(Also, if you look at the file properties, what is the file extension? It should be .exe, but as you have them hidden we can't tell from that screenshot.)

There are some hints of wich to use. If it states "anwendung" then it's an exe file. He got more then one in that folder also different version numbers.

He might have accidently coupled an affinity Photo file to excel? So excel will try to open that file ?

If he clicked open with in Windows(10) and coupled excel then that program will try to open that file.

I just bought  affinity photo, installed it, but it doesn't open. It crushes while loading.
Can I please get some help?
Also, why would you charge for a beta version that still needs work and has problems?
    I'm obviously not an expert.
I'd love some help and hopefully it will open and work.
I'm using windows 10 on a pretty new computer.

First, you're in the wrong forum, this is the Designer beta forum. You should go to the Photo forum.

Second, you can install the final versions as you like. No need to use the beta's where there's a chance of  problems.

The final version and the beta version will install next to eachother, so you can use both as you like.

Did you upgrade your graphics card drivers? I would start with that. And make sure you reboot before you even try to start Affinity Photo.

@Tourmaline@ sorry, I should have been clearer: it's the fact that the blue selection marquee cancels when scrolling rather than the objects not being selected. Try scrolling up and down a few times using the scroll wheel with the left mouse button is held down while making a selection marquee.

In the screen capture GIF I did not release the left mouse button so it shouldn't have canceled.

I did as you suggested but still can't replicate!
