No it doesn't make it easier either. I'm working on a path and the only way to select it back is through the layers panel which is painful.

Here's a way merge them: select all the pixel layers you want to merge, group them, then right-click on the group in the Layers panel and select Rasterise... from the contextual menu. They will me merged into a single pixel layer.

This is the same for locking layers. The only way to select the objects on the locked layer or artboard is to select it from the Layers Panel. It's a quick way of locking down all the objects so you don't accidentally move them which is more likely to happen than accidentally moving an artboard.
 
The only real solution would be to have a separate lock button for keeping artboards in place which would need to go in Feature Requests.

I think we have a few things logged similar to this where it feels as though we are being asked to press and hold the keys in the wrong order. I believe it is currently set this way because on the Mac because cmd+space brings up the Spotlight which Windows doesn't use. I'll check to see what we already have logged and add your comments to the list. Thanks for the report.
