  1. Hi all, I found out something rather interesting today Adobe Bridge is free. There is a catch unless you have opened a raw file in photoshop it will not let you edit in its own built in copy of adobe camera raw. But it does give you access to keywording collections and the asset management that tends to be missing in alternatives to adobe products. That and "open in" and right near the top of that list i find Affinity Photo and also Adobes DNG converter. It's not lightroom with its catalog but its not bad pretty much all the library functions are implemented. I've been using an old version of lightroom for asset management. i'm pretty sure that Bridge makes a good free alternative to manage photos with affinity photo doing the image processing. download it and have a play.
  2. I will stick with improvements, rather than legacy support. Has page plus development finished?
  3. Serif never made page plus for the Mac and never said they would. If you don't care to install windows on a mac, (it does work quite well in a VM to be fair) run Windows on a PC. Lets say for example Affinity Publisher was to support page+, when does it get to stop supporting it? As has been mentioned earlier there are objects in page+ which do not map to Affinity Publisher, the only way to map them in is to add to affinity publishers code base and only because of windows users who want to press a button and import an alien file format. The end result will be a buggy slow application.
  4. I'm wondering how designed some of these old files are, Publisher has master pages and seems really easy to create layouts. PPP users seem to be wanting to import documents instead of layouts. That doesn't seem a great way forward. It's kind of like how word can be used to create a well formatted document but can also be filled with lots of local formatting spaces and tabs to create a really horrible document. If what you are doing works for you in page plus carry on with it. For indesign users its costing them every month to be stuck with indesign.
  5. Hi all, with everything so new this is going to be way down the list, but might be loved. Photos have a lot of metadata and some of it can be useful. Title , Caption Photographer Copyright for example are things you may want to use with photos others like location exposure settings camera and lens maybe also of interest. They could be properties of image frames and styled. Replace the image and these all get updated on the page. Captions and credits are one of the most tedious tasks to do manually. It might even help photographers get paid. Way down the list maybe, but who wouldn't love some automation of this tedious task.
  6. The system requirements seem to be a little over cautious, I saw only EL Capitan supported but installed it on Yosemite anyway. It was worth waiting for and very intuitive. Thank You.
  7. Thank you, I see it is a cross platform issue as the other thread was for the Windows version of affinity photo. Maybe it can be avoided by passing prophotoRGB outside of affinity perhaps an export and then being the layer back in. I will see if I can do this. Export as a 16 bit tiff seems to work then dropping onto Colorefxpro4 in finder making alterations as required and pasting back as a layer with a simple copy in finder and a paste in affinity seems to be ok as a work around. I'd guess it wouldn't be the hardest thing to change within Affinity
  8. Hi I started with a photo in Lightroom and exported it as Prophotorgb into affinity photo 1.67 I then duplicated the background layer and edited in nikcolorefx4 unfortunately the color looks completely different to how it was in affinity photo and lightroom. This makes it impossible to judge what adjustments to make. I googled the problem and found that if the macbook pro is using a prophoto rgb mode then the color change doesn't appear to happen unfortunately it makes my screen look quite blue looking. I repeated the process but this time taking it into photoshop and then nik colorefx4 and this time with the native profile the color stayed the same in photoshop lightroom and nikcolorefx4. Using Affinity Photo as host, using brilliance and warmth in nik colorefx4 looks like its been subtly applied however once back in affinity its like a spray tan disaster. maybe its the use of prophotorgb which is causing the problem.
  9. Ok having looked at the other thread which suggested sizing at 1440 x 900 points and the pdf exported at 1440 x 900 (no units) according to info and thats a bit bigger than my macbook screen at 1280 x 800 1280 by 800 still seems big but thats with 300 dpi ... test.afdesign.zip I've added some text to the pdf is it readable on your screen size? Its 14pt Dosis test4.pdf
  10. To be fair its quicker to create a new afdesign file create a 6400 by 4000 artboard add a rectangle 4800,3200px with a 4pt border aligned to the inside and scaleable. color ffcc00 (Nat geo yellow) aligned centre horizontal and aligned to the right border insert a photo from the media browser and drag into the rectangle using the layer panel size to taste. select the artboard and set the color black. Try resize the artboard from transform panel with the link on e.g change 4000 to 800 and the width should go to 1280. unfortunately the contents dont scale so cmd z and transform artboard to object shift select the contents and this time it should scale. when i did it previously there was no option to resize the document maybe because i started with a pdf anyway the first time i exported i still had a large blank document in the corner so i went back to 6400 x 4000 and scaled the document in document setup to 1280 by 800 . exported the pdf again and this time everything was document sized but not 1280 by 800 much smaller. found this thread What size for say 800px by 800px in points? (Matt) It'll be 800x800 points... you just need to decide what dpi you needed. The idea is to think of points not pixels, then decide on a dpi that you require. For 1x assets, that's usually 72dpi (800x800 pixels), for 2x it's 144dpi (1600x1600 pixels) and for 3x it's 216dpi (2400x2400 pixels), but you can obviously decide on any value that's appropriate. If we're talking about Designer, then 800 points at any dpi will occupy 800 points on your screen at 100% in the standard vector view mode. The number of pixels that are in this document will vary based on the dpi, but this is the bit that you shouldn't need to think about - just aim for the right number of points at the right dpi and then everything will make sense. Incidentally, for anyone that is interested, this is actually how you have to program for OS X and iOS - you use points as the unit type (not pixels) and you pass in bitmap data that has sufficient pixel resolution for the number of points multiplied by the 'backing scale' (2x for 'retina')
  11. Sorry the upload was F.. corrupted was 20MB short i'm re uploading it but its slow
  12. version 1.6.0 on the Mac I'm attaching a screen shot of the file in preview at 1:1 view as you can see clearly its nothing close to 1280 by 800
  13. A simple project the resolution of the pdf is according to info 307 × 192 it was in AD 1280 x 800 test.afdesign test.pdf
  14. I have set my Artboards to 1280 x 800 pixels the same as my screen resolution and 300 dpi for images. I want the images to be able to scale up without loss of resolution. unfortunately the pdf document in preview is smaller than that at 1:1 Ideally i want the document to still look good on a retina display with the fonts scaled in proportion to the display size. I guess i'm doing something wrong but I haven't a clue what it is. my original artboards were 6400 x 4000 and i used the convert to object to rescale them and then used the object to artboard command to get them back. my objects didn't appear to scale with the artboard if i resized them any other way. hope someone can help cheers john
  15. I've recently discovered the asset section of affinity designer and i'm using it for creating pages and frames. Into these frames I want to add photo's and i've used a published folder from lightroom as the source of my image files. Sometimes these images require further work and republishing e.g lets say a colour photo would work better as a black & white. Would it be possible for affinity designer to recognise the change to the media file and update the artboards in the project automatically? kind of hoped place would work but that seems to just create a project copy at a large scale. being able to update project assets by including them as linked external files could be quite handy
  16. I use both actually. This actually started for me due to something I saw in a pdf file in designer one of the images had been extended on top by mirroring the top edge. The background was subtle enough so it wasn't obvious. It pretty much depends on the detail but mirroring round the edges can give you a larger image to crop sometimes. Also works quite well for a wrapped canvas print you just use the mirrored parts for the side edges. I will try your technique saves having a calculator around. It works well, much faster to apply
  17. ok i have an image of 4056 x 2535. I expand the canvas to 12168 x2535 holding the background to the middle. cmd j it looks like i have 3 objects lining up at 0,0 is top right of the left mirror 4056,0 is the top left (its flipped horizontal) the middle object TL 4056,0 TR 8112,0 The right object TR 8112,0 TL 12168,0 while they are 3 then sometimes you see the line sometimes you don't at 100% you don't merging them together the lines disappear at all zoom levels. The merge gives you a new layer. it seems at first logical that if the first is from 0,0 to 4056,0 then the next should be at 4057,0 or perhaps 0,0 to 4055 and the next 4056,0 to 8111. but the transform tool is giving the outside edges of the object not pixel coordinate which makes perfect sense and easier math too Thank you for your assistance, now if only I could automate it.
  18. Hi what i'm trying to do is mirror a photograph on all sides. so if it was say 500 by 400 i might change the canvas to 800 by 500 duplicate the photo and flip it. The problem is i can't quite get a perfect line up. is the top left corner pixel 1,1 or 0,0 it seems like there is a few pixels gap. maybe its just me
  19. Yes, just what I was looking to do. I hope it can be implemented.
  20. I didn't know it, but my Pentax k5 with it floating sensor (part of IBIS) has a handy trick it can twist the sensor and correct for the camera being a little tilted. The photo's I was having to correct were taken on a Nikon.
  21. A lot of camera's know how they are being held via electronic levels built into the camera body and record this in the exif information. It would be kinda cool if this could be used to straighten up a photo, simply and quickly after going through a lot of a colleagues photo's to straighten and crop for a website. It would be a massive time saver. The distort-> perspective tool is pretty useful for now. (as is lightroom / acr's new transform panel). thank you
  22. Hi Matt, When I click on the link for the macro pack i'm taken to a page which asks me for name and email and then when i click the button I get told I already registered that email and I can't get any further.
  23. One of the things I really like about affinity designer is its ability to import pdf files. Ok there can be a few font issues as the fonts used in the Pdf are not necessarily on the system, but... its good. One thing that really grinds my gears is that 99% of Pdf Files are Portrait Orientated and my screen is landscape. This results in scrolling around the page or perhaps attempting to view 2 pages side by side. The problem with 2 pages side by side is they are now too small to read the text in them! They are such a @$%! disaster. Please could we have an import tool which lets us quickly put our pdf files into landscape. Ideal would probably just be to split the portrait page to two columns top half on the left bottom half on the right. Or perhaps give us the option of importing into landscape artboards and moving the content from the left half to the right and then resizing. I think you understand where I am coming from. This is so messed up. Have you ever printed a pdf file just so you could read it hassle free and then shred it. or just become yet another pile of loose leaf a4 sheets. Even adobe acrobat fails to allow a sensible reflow. All I really want is a file that fits my screen and is at a font size i can read , is that too much ? cheers john Even an action as basic as import pdf page cut page in half and put bottom half to the right side of the left would do! 99% of the time its a manual i'm trying to work from and its best on a second screen or a window on the next work space.
  24. Of course it is? What did you not understand? for example is there a pressing need for a raw develop module in Affinity Designer? I'd say not but perhaps you can see an advantage in complicating designer to include this function. There is no need to preload every possible thing you might need at some point , maybe 1 day this month. Lean and fast beats bloated and slow.
  25. I've had designer for a while now and more to the spirit of this thread I like having designer and photo seperate, for one some tools are for bitmaps some are for vectors its better to have working tools where you need them. not grayed out because they don't apply to the object you are working on. Keep things in context and it gets a lot simpler. What are you going to use a node tool for on a bitmap for instance. Kind of surprised i've ended up in desgner most of the time. Only wish I could see the bleed lines
