  1. The aspect ratio is really not important for the source images and only matters for the final output. My main image has a square aspect ratio, in this case @ 2k resolution. I'm only copying the textures into the channels of the square image to produce a dirt map, so the more chaotic, the better. Using the video that James made on channel packing, I was able to achieve a similar result, but the process takes considerably longer and has more steps, which is what I was hoping could be condensed. That said, what is your method?
  2. Thank you Walt. This was my fear as well, though I was really hoping that I was missing something. I'm trying so hard to replace PS with AP in my workflow this year, but I keep running into small brick walls. Although they're small, they tend to add up. Still holding on to hope though.
  3. I made a video which shows the process in Photoshop. I hope this better explains what I'm trying to do in AP. Thanks! channel_packing_PS.mp4
  4. Thank you, but this is not what I'm trying to do. I'll post a video that will hopefully better explain my goal.
  5. I'll post a video showing the workflow in Photoshop, which demonstrates what I'm trying to do. Hopefully this will explain it better.
  6. Thank you, this is useful. Though it does sort of work, I wonder if there is a shorter workflow. For example, in PS, it's literally copy/paste and you're done. I copy the image (in full color, not greyscale) from one document and just paste it into the desired channel. I then repeat that for the remaining two channels and I'm done. This AP workflow seems a bit wonky, though I am happy to know it's possible. I'm not getting the same result as I do in PS, but I'll keep investigating. Thanks again!
  7. I can't seem to find any info on this and so far I can't get it to work, so I'm going to presume it's not possible, but.... If someone can enlighten me, I'd be happy to be wrong. Is it possible to copy an image into a single RGB channel as you can do in Photoshop? To be specific, I want to copy three separate texture images into the Red, Green and Blue channels (one for each). In Photoshop this can easily be done, and I was hoping it could also be done in AP, but so far I can't make it happen. Any help would be great! Thanks!
  8. Hi Callum, Thank you for the reply. I will make a screen recording today. For the record, it is working. My point is that it's working on both transform options. Specifically, I'm not seeing a difference in the export between the two options as mentioned by James in the referenced video. What I'm trying to understand is, if both options produce the same result, is there an advantage to using one over the other? I'll post a video later today. Thanks again!! D
  9. Hey All, Got a question about OCIO and Blender's Filmic profile in AP. I'll preface this by saying I'm no expert in color/gama spaces and profiles, so go easy. Here's my situation. I'm running some tests with 32bit OpenEXR renders out of Blender and compositing them in AP. Up until last week, admittedly, I did this in PS, but PS on the Mac can't open OpenEXR files, and I do like working on my M1-Max. I digress. Back on point... When I open these renders in AP, I get the same exact export output whether I use the ICC Display Transform or OICO Display Transform so long as I have the layer setup as show in the video put out by James Ritson, of Affinity Photo, i.e. OCIO, LUT, OCIO. It's identical on export out to TIFF or JPEG. Can anyone explain what is happening, or what I'm missing... or has AP just been updated since James made his video? Video is linked here. Thank you!
  10. FWIW: I'm on a MacBook Pro M1-Max, and I can't reproduce this problem at all, even with all of the mentioned steps discussed throughout this thread. As per @James Ritson suggestions, I've made no changes to my display profile.
  11. For what it's worth, and because I just discovered this benchmarking ability... Here's my 16" MBP M1-Max: 32-core GPU, 64GB RAM, 10-core CPU.
  12. Shift + Command + I, inverts the selection. So I would have to do that first, then make my mask. I know it's only 1 extra step, but again, this is a single click in PS which is why I find it frustrating.
  13. This is the problem. It shouldn't be this involved, right? This is a type of masking I do very often and A-Photo just makes it painful. In Photoshop, I literally set my selection, then option (alt) click on the mask icon in the layers tab, and done. No weirdness, just an inverted mask with no issues. I so badly want to replace Photoshop with Affinity Photo, but it's issues like this and others than continue to prevent that change. I'm shocked this hasn't been addressed by now. Thanks for replying by the way.
  14. Not for me. It also does not work on my Mac. Never has. Let me be clear in my process. Let's say I have a layer that I want to create an inverted mask from a selection. I make my selection, then option (alt) click on the mask icon and the layer mask created is solid black and ignores my selection. But, if I don't use the option (alt) key, and just add the mask, the mask is accurate to the selection, but then I must invert the mask to get it to work. This simple operation is standard in Photoshop and works without fail on both my Mac and PC workstations.
  15. Hey Everyone, In the latest version of Affinity Photo, is there still no way to create an inverted mask, ala option clicking on the create mask icon? This has never worked in either the Windows or MacOS versions of A-Photo, or maybe I'm missing something? I find it frustrating that I have to always create a layer mask, then invert it after the fact. Thanks!
  16. Thanks guys. Since the bug seems to persist in the latest beta as anon2 mentioned, I won't take the time. For now I'll just have to wait and hope that it's fixed in a future release. Unfortunately, it's issues like these that continue to prevent me from using Serif products in place of errr... you know who. I am hopeful though and will check in with future versions, once released. I appreciate the feedback!
  17. Not sure if this is a known thing or if I'm just seeing it for the first time. MacBook Pro, running OS 10.14.6. 32gb RAM, Affinity Photo 1.8.2. When blending a layer using "Blend Options" this layer's blend is ignored once a life filter (gaussian blur) is applied. Nothing I do seems to correct this. Also, if you click on "Preserve Alpha" then turn it off... it doesn't actually turn it off and remains as though it was still on. Thoughts?
  18. Is there a way to have text which is on a path, scale like regular text when part of a group? I'll try to explain in detail here: I have a group of objects consisting of 2 text layers, 4 shape layers. One of the text layers is on a path forming an arch over my shape layers. The lower text is just normal text. These are all grouped together as one object. When I scale the group, all the layers, including the bottom text scale proportionately. However the upper text layer (on the path), this text does not scale at all.z Thanks.
  19. Hi MEB, Sorry for the delayed response. I wasn't aware of your reply until yesterday. To answer your questions: I am using a second monitor, but did not think to try dragging the HSL panel to the laptop screen. My displays are all set to their default resolutions and are as follows: Laptop - 15.4" 2880 x 1800, BenQ - 27" 2560 x 1440. Since reporting this issue, I have reformatted my MacBook Pro and reinstalled everything. So far I have not seen the issue, but admittedly have avoided Affinity Photo while working on client projects. I'll resume a heavy workflow now that I have some breathing room again and see if the problem returns. If there is anything else you think I should try, please let me know, otherwise I'll report back if the problem shows up again. Thanks! Danny
  20. Thanks @walt.farrell, I read the thread and didn't find much helpful info. In fact, if turning off Metal Compute is my only option I'll just not use the app. Turning off functionality is not a solution, it's a bandaid. This problem has been reported by others, going back to prior versions. I was hoping for an actual solution, or info on when one might be coming.
  21. Hey Guys! Has anyone else had an issue with the HSL UI? This seems to happen quite often but I can't necessarily repeat it, it just happens randomly. However when this happens, my only recourse is to restart AP. Pretty frustrating to say the least. Specs: MacBook Pro 15" (2019) macOS Mojave, V. 10.14.6 2.6 GHz Core i7 32 GB 2400 Mhz DDR4 RAM Radeon Pro 560X 4GB Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB Edit: Sorry, forgot to mention I'm using Affinity Photo 1.7.3
  22. Hi titch, no this is not normal. Please see my reply to your other post on this exact topic. Also note: you're not alone. Many have posted about this, and hopefully it's resolved quickly.
  23. Hi titch, I don't think this is something you can adjust on your own. This has been reported by multiple users on other threads and would seem to be a bug or some other developmental oversight. I'm running a 9th gen Intel Core i7 with 32GB RAM on a M.2 SSD HD and the "develop" function takes way too long, though not as long as some others are reporting. Hopefully Serif will address this soon.
  24. Hi Thors, In my experience so far... opening raw images in 1.7 is faster than 1.6. Editing a raw image is not only faster, but improved in 1.7. But, exporting (hitting the "develop" button) from the Develop persona seems to take ages, which is weird. 1.6 was considerably faster in this regard. I'm not sure why this is, and it has been reported in other threads. Hopefully this will be addressed soon.
