For the search engines: Updating my graphics card driver to the latest NVIDIA driver solved my problem.

Thank you so much, it is working now, great!
I reinstalled the latest NVIDIA driver for my 10 year old DELL Precision M4500 and it seems to have done the job.

Hi to you both @CYAN4S, @JimRad and Welcome to the Forums,
Normally when crashing on opening a file or starting a new one, it's down to the graphics card and performing a clean install the latest version of your graphics drivers, should resolve the issue.

Actually it was not that hard after all - I converted the text to shapes, cloned it and enlargened it using the Expand Stroke function and added the stroke and text to one shape.
Then I did a number of clones, each one moved down and right with the arrow keys, then added all of them to one shape, done!
