  1. In the master page tutorial https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/tutorials/publisher/desktop/video/286534891 the presenter changes the color of the background by putting a rectangle around it and then changing the color. I did that - but this causes picture frames to sink behind this rectangle and become invisible (if you do not precisely click on them) Is there a better way to change a page color? In Photoshop I'd select all and do a fill. The help doesn't show any entries for "fill" so there may not be such a command. What's the best way to do this?
  2. I found the problem. I have selected the master page with a rectangle tool as the presenter demonstrated here: https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/tutorials/publisher/desktop/video/286534891 So, basically, I'm drawing a picture frame within a rectangle made by the rectangle tool. This hides all the picture frames. As soon as I deleted the rectangle, all the picture frame rectangle reappeared. They had been hidden behind the selection of the page. Is there a better way to change the color of a page than using the rectangle tool? Doing this like the presenter did, hides all the picture frames when not clicking on them.
  3. I came across the error that caused this problem. In this tutorial https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/tutorials/publisher/desktop/video/286534891 of master pages the presenter selects the background and changes its color. But he swishes so fast with his cursor that I didn't quite see which rectangle tool he selected. And I selected the picture frame rectangle tool instead of the regular rectangle tool - a difference unnoticeable for someone just spending his first five minutes with the application. It would be a good idea to slow down and let people see what exactly you are clicking. I only found out about this when I found out why I could create a text box OUTSIDE the document, but not inside. Sure - you can't create a text box inside a picture frame as it seems.
  4. You're right, Mac. After so many years these things go on autopilot and I had to do it and watch myself: you have to delete the layer (without leaving the text tool - this was the part I remembered) Well, the letter "v" will become and important one on my keyboard now
  5. What if you copied the file of the existing book, and deleted the text in the pages - and so using the exact same master pages as in the other project without dragging master pages across? Would this work?
  6. Thank you. So a better way would probably be to save versions as different documents? At least at this stage of a 3-page eMagazine the file sizes are small. I like to explore ideas without holding back and want to be free to remove anything without later missing it.
  7. How would you do these snapshot style actions? Or is there a better way to quickly compare design variants?
  8. Different softwares, different attitudes. I'm sure plenty of people bang their heads against wall when dealing with Photoshop, finding it not as intuitive as In-Design or Publisher, where you of course have to switch to the "move" tool to re"move" a frame.
  9. I am using picture frames to place images as somehow the place image tool doesn't work for me without picture frames. On a master page, I can see the text frames and all form elements so I can see the shapes of the elements. Except the picture frame. I have to click into it to show its outline. Is there a way to make the picture frame appear like the text box outlines and the other shape elements so I can better judge the appearance of the form elements? thanks!
  10. Thank you Walt. I made two mistakes. 1. I had content on the Master pages. 2. I tried to delete a text frame when in text frame tool - works in Adobe, but here it's different, I had to move to the move tool to delete a text box. Solved, thank you.
  11. Thanks. I removed all content from the master pages. I actually started a new project and as I don't really need master pages, I created a simple master page with just the dark gray background. No 2 pages will be alike anyway. I found out why I could not remove a text frame: you cannot delete text frame when you are in text frame mode. The "delete" key will not work. You have to switch to another tool, the move tool. A bit counter-intuitive, but I finally got it.
  12. I removed the text from all the master pages. I could not remove the image, so I'll have start again with a new document. edit: I found out why I couldn't remove a text frame: you can't remove it within the text frame tool. You you to go to the move tool to remove it. thanks!
  13. I checked the web and someone else had to turn off "visual flow" to get the text frame tool working again. This didn't work for me. I'm attaching the whole document - it hasn't gone far until I hit the text frame problem. On the front page I cannot change the size of the text frame, and I cannot add another text frame. The cursor shows the shape you have when you enter text, but not the shape of the text frame tool - clicking the text frame tool icon again doesn't change that. Bruce and Mac, thanks for offering to look at this problem. I think it started when I created linked text frames as described in this tutorial: https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/tutorials/publisher/desktop/video/286540600 After that, the text frame tool went haywire. PS: I opened an older file (attempt 1) and the same behavior started. Maybe there is a setting that I don't know about that takes out the text frame tool? (I had a problem with the image placement tool, too, where when selecting the image for import didn't bring up the frame where you could tell how big the image should be - it always covered the whole page. I got around that by using the image frame tool and then fill in the image with the image placement tool) I'm on a MacBook Pro 2012 retina 16 GB RAM 500 GB SSD running OS X "High Sierra"
  14. I can neither edit, remove, nor edit text frames. I click on a text frame, click delete, it flickers, and then it is still there. I cannot add a text frame either. I click on the tool symbol, drag a rectangle, and nothing happens. The only way to remove a text frame is to delete the Master page. The whole document is now stuck because I cannot add nor remove text.
  15. I also have a problem with the text frame tool. have a text frame on one of my master pages that I cannot remove. At best it turns pink. I also cannot edit this field. And I cannot place any other text field. I closed the app and reopened but that didn't help. Looks like the whole document has been corrupted.
  16. One of the key features in Photoshop is a history snapshot, so you can quickly compare versions. I found the history panel on Publisher, but couldn't find the "take snapshot" button. Where can I find that and how do I turn it on? thanks!
  17. I have been working in Photoshop over ten years, but I'm new to In-Design style software. I'm amazed that there is no manual. This is a major bug to leave creating a manual out. You want to compete with Adobe, and you have a good chance snatching a sizable portion of their business as I generally like the way your software works. But one key thing is to tell people how to fly this thing. Give a manual. Don't let them crash. The help section is awkward. You have place the cursor into the search box, but when you go to the keyboard, the search box is gone. You have to keep the cursor there with one hand, and type with the other, or the search box disappears on you. How helpful is it? Well, I just learned about picture frames. I wanted to rotate an image. It tells me to drag over the rotate button. It doesn't tell me what the hell this button looks like or where it is. So you need: a. a systematically written manual b. better access than the disappearing search box - how about a manual/help window you can keep open - ideal for people new to the software.
  18. I'm on High Sierra. Yes, on a document I just started in this version. I have to use the picture frame tool in order to place an image. PS: I need a manual of Affinity. I heard some people put together a pdf of the help section. Is it possible to get one of these?
  19. I was able to insert a picture by using the picture frame. What I couldn't do is - due to the lack of a manual - rotate or scale the image. The "help" section tells me to drag over the rotate icon - where is the rotate icon and what does it look like?
  20. Thanks, Walt. I just started with this kind of software, so I wasn't familiar with picture frames. I will look them up how to do them and then give it a try.
  21. A jpg file. High Sierra and the latest 1.7.0.293 There is a thread on the bug forum: many people have crashes when using the place image tool. I don't get a crash, but the tool is not working for me, either. Is there a way to downgrade to a previous version? Screen recording : I have to check how to do that.
  22. Mine doesn't crash the program, but I can't place images at all. 1.7.0.293 is not usable as no images can be added to a document. High Sierra.
  23. Version 1.7.0.293 (most recent) Cannot place images into document. After clicking "place image tool" dialog opens up to pick image file. Pick image file, click OK - but now the bug: Instead of getting the special cursor that lets you draw a rectangle, you get nothing. The image places IMMEDIATELY onto the page, filling it completely no matter how small. The image can then no longer be changed. Due to this bug, no document with images in it can be created. Which is bad, as I want to create a photography magazine.
  24. I tried it out with large and small image files. I'm not getting the special cursor. The image is stretched to fill the whole page and cannot be changed after that. Even a tiny 500 x 500 px file gets stretched over the whole page. There isn't much I can do. Click the "place image tool" symbol, get the open file dialog, click on the file you want to insert, click OK, and then get no special cursor.
  25. This is the tutorial: https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/tutorials/publisher/desktop/video/286538332 In the tutorial, the presenter clicks on the "place image tool" symbol, the window opens, he chooses the image, and then he has a special cursor shape, and he can draw a rectangle. This doesn't work in my case. When I click on the image, it immediately is placed onto the whole page, filling it. I do not get the option of drawing a rectangle, the cursor doesn't change. I can't place an image - the tool, for some reason, doesn't work.
