Channels and inpainting

I'm stuck. I inpainted out a cat on a red chair and want to replace this cat with a masked cat on the layer above. So far I can't get my  channel selection and inpainting on bottom layer to "stick." Keep getting the bottom layer cat selection to show white, and or cat on upper layer won't show at all. Help please

I reopened and all is well.  Didn't hurt that I watched channels and inpainting tutorials. I love the new short tuts with the english guy.
