It is not possible to save a file under the name of an existing sub-folder. I always enter the folder instead of saving the file.

Do you type the name and then press Enter? Or do you type the name and press Save?

If you're pressing Enter I think the behavior you describe is what I'd expect, unless you also add the file extension when you type the name.

But I'm not at my computer right now to see how other applications behave.
