When using the Vector Brush Tool or Pencil Tool in Affinity Designer (Vector Persona) make sure you set the Controller dropdown in the context toolbar (right above the work area) to Automatic. In Pixel Persona (the second icon on the top left of the application interface), there's no need to do anything.
