Sorry to make comparisons with Indesign, but that's what you have to beat, so...

In Indesign I have 'layer options' for placed images, so if it's a psd file I can open the options and choose which layers of the original psd file are visible. It's a nice feature which you could possibly do for both psd files and native Designer or Photo files that are placed in Publisher. Why do I need it? Sometimes images are cut out on a layer in the original file, and in Publisher I want to try my layout with that image placed with and without it's background - saves me having to open the original file and save two versions of it - that's just one example.
