I have just downloaded the trial of designer and would like to know how to scale a drawing (for example in need to be able to design ornamental steel gates in a 20:1 ratio

Welcome to the forums :)

We don't currently have a drawing scale feature, but is has been previously requested here.
I'd recommend checking out this post by MaxClass as it outlines an easy way to set up a document and work to scale.
