I have a gif image that refuses to print accurately on my inkjet and wonder whether it can be adjusted in Affinity Photo (Windows version). A bright red part of the image prints as muddy brown. The rest of it is fine. I bought the image, a family crest, to print out for friends and unfortunately it was available only as a gif. My other software produces the same result. I don't use gifs normally and all the internet discussion of colour tables and suchlike leaves me none the wiser. Is there a gizmo in Affinity that would allow me to modify the gif? I'd be eternally grateful for any guidance.

Even without the restrictions imposed by the limited colour palette of the GIF format, bright colours on your screen are never going to translate well to paper. Green and orange, and to a lesser extent red, are particularly badly affected by the difference between the gamut (range of colours) of an RGB monitor and the much smaller gamut of a CMYK inkjet printer.

Absolutely, Alfred. But my screen is pretty well calibrated to match the printer and reds normally print well, although often a tad darker than the screen version. I've run off a couple of colour charts and they're close enough. In the case of the gif, though, the red is too far away from the proper colour to be useable. I may ask the "crest" company if they can supply a jpeg or tiff.

I hope they can, Al, and I hope that works out better for you. Good luck!

Success! You made me consider screen brightness, Alfred, so I bumped up the "exposure" by a few stops – a lot brighter than looked normal – and it printed out almost perfectly. I may have another go at screen calibration, although my results have been fine so far with photos. Thanks again.
