Fahad Posted January 25, 2018 Posted January 25, 2018 Hi, So, My year with Adobe CS came to an end and i wanted a more cost effective solution and was told about affinity. I downloaded the trial and am a day into it. I have only just managed to do a gradient mask as it is a bit different (and frankly, more sloppy) than photoshop, but since it's going to save me a small fortune, I can live with it What I can't understand is why it runs so slow, after every thing i do, i get one of those beachall thingies that tell me to wait, and it takes 30 seconds before I can use the program again. This never happened with your rival so I don't think my Macbook pro is too slow. Any ideas on speeding things up? Quote
Staff MEB Posted January 25, 2018 Staff Posted January 25, 2018 Hi Fahad, Welcome to Affinity Forums What's the model/specs of your MacBook? Is this happening with all files or just with a specific one? Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 Only just started using it and working with one file im making from scratch (a roller banner) This never happened with PS Also how do i cut a selection? Everytime I select then press delete, it just deletes the whole layer I feel 10 days is not going to give me enough time to learn this to make an educated and informed decision. So far, not sure this app is for me and will probably end up biting the bullet and going back to PS Quote
Staff MEB Posted January 25, 2018 Staff Posted January 25, 2018 Hi Fahad, Regarding cutting the selection, you are probably working with an Image layer type (check the label between parenthesis after the layer's name in the Layers panel). If so, right-click the layer in the Layers panel and select Rasterise to convert it to a pixel layer type. You should then be able to copy/cut and paste as usual or duplicate just the content of the selection in a new layer pressing ⌘ (cmd)+J. Image layers are a special layer type that retains all the original image data - you can think of them as embedded images -. They are created when you use the Place Image Tool, the File ▸ Place command or when you simply drag them from the Finder (Mac) or File Explorer (Windows) to the canvas of an opened document. They can be transformed globally (rotated, skewed etc) without losing quality but they cannot be edited/manipulated at a pixel level. For that they must be rasterised as described above. We have a large set of video tutorials to help you get started with the program. Check this thread for a list of all video available: Official Affinity Photo (Desktop) Video Tutorials. Regarding the low performance, what tools/steps are you using/performing? Any chance you can record a small clip with the Layers panel visible so we can see what you are doing?
