you make the changes to high freq layer and low freq layers and then add in masks to these layers to make the changes in only areas you want. Or you can make a selection to both the high freq layer and low freq layers. invert the selection and delete the portion you don't want. you make the changes to high freq layer and low freq layers and then add in masks make the changes in only areas you want.

if you do the selection first and then apply frequency separation, you have to delete any unfiltered parts in the high frequency layer otherwise it'll look messed up because it has linear light blending.
