Removing an image from the background.

Recommended Posts

I have an image with a white background. Previously I read a post about how to select the image and being cut and paste to a new layer and I followed the steps and it worked. Now I have forgotten the actual steps because when I select the image/object with the select brush try to cut and paste it takes the whole image with the white background to a new layer. I searched and searched for that previous post but cannot find it again. I could use a little assistance with these steps (because I'm clearly overlooking a step somewhere in the process) or point me to the post. Any assistance much appreciated. I'm just an amateur at this but learning. Just so you see what the image looks like that I'm referring to I've attached it below. I'm trying to extract the leaf from the white background.  :)
