jessejanderson
I might've missed it but couldn't find anything on the forum about this. Is there a way to create a new guide based on percentage? I often like to create either a simple crosshair (50%h, 50%v) or sometimes a rule of thirds grid (33.3%h, 66.6%h, 33.3%v, 66.6%v). As far as I can tell the only way to create grids is to drag them from the ruler or use the Guides Manager which appears to only let me use pixel precision, rather than percentages. Thanks! jessejanderson
I just noticed that when you drag guides out of the ruler you get a little snap for the 50% center of h/v which solves my "create a crosshair" guide. No such luck for 33.3% / 66.6% points though. Seems like creating rule-of-thirds guides would be a fairly common request so maybe there's a workaround I don't know of (outside of math + pixel precision with the Guides Manager)
Staff Ben Posted November 25, 2014 Staff Share Posted November 25, 2014 We do allow you type formula into input boxes. I probably need to include the constants for the page dimensions, so you can use it as you describe above. When I do, you should be able to type "w * 33.33%" or "w / 3" (more accurately) to get the position you want. The input box will be improved over time. jessejanderson
Ahh, yah that would be awesome. Running formulas in the Transform Tool for scaling things seemed weird at first but seems natural now - I'm sure this would be the same. (Though a "New Guide" dialog that accepted percentages or fractions would be nice too)
RKS
It seems really weird not to have a one click option, like photoshop does, where you can choose to have the grid automatically divide the page into equal parts in order to find the centre and how far you are from the edges for symmetry. What I'm gleaning from this thread is that you have to calculate some formula in order to tell the program how many squares you want in the grid? For mathematically challenged people like myself that seems cruel, lol. When is affinity going to offer the choice to divide the page into a grid that is percentage based? or am I missing something that isn't easy to find?
