It is worth noting that when you do a Paste (and Paste Inside) it will paste the object in it's original location so it may look as though it hasn't worked as the pasted object will be outside of the object's bounds. On the Layers Panel, check to see if the object you did the Paste Inside on has a White triangle. If you expand this you'll be able to select the object that was pasted and then move it into view.
