Brian Cross Posted March 11 Posted March 11 I am using Affinity Publisher 2.5.7 on a Mac Mini M4 with MacOS 15.2 but when I try to upgrade to 2.6 via "Check for Updates", I get a screen message (see attached) saying: "Update Error! Affinity Publisher 2 can't be updated if it's running from the location it was downloaded to." Can anyone help? Thanks, Brian Quote
GarryP Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Welcome to the forums @Brian Cross Did you properly install the application, or are you launching it from the downloaded disk image? MikeTO 1 Quote
Brian Cross Posted March 11 Author Posted March 11 Yes, I've installed it correctly. I also have Affinity Publisher on my laptop and when I open it, a message automatically appears to invite me to upgrade to version 2.6. But not so, on my Mac Mini. Quote
GarryP Posted March 11 Posted March 11 What did you do to install it? Please give the specific steps, if you can remember them. Quote
Brian Cross Posted March 11 Author Posted March 11 The usual routine: download the application, click on the dmg file, assign it to the Applications folder and then bin the dmg file. I've been using Macs since 1985! Quote

That all sounds fine to me. 7 minutes ago, Brian Cross said: I've been using Macs since 1985! We sometimes get people who don’t know that they have to install applications, and we have no idea how much experience you personally have other than what you have told us at the time. I’ve only ever seen this happen when people run the application from the DMG so I don’t think I can help further but someone else probably can. Quote
Brian Cross Posted March 11 Author Posted March 11 Hi Garry, Thanks for giving time to my query – it is much appreciated. I'm puzzled why this is happening on my Mac Mini but not my laptop. The only thing I can think of is to delete it and download and reinstall it again. Do you think that would be a good option? Quote
GarryP Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Sorry, I haven’t even switched my old mac on for years so I’m not the best person to be advising further. There are plenty of macOS experts in the forums so hopefully one of them will come along, see this, and be able to help. In the meantime, if uninstalling and re-installing is a viable option which won’t cause too much hassle then that’s always an option I’d say. Quote
MikeTO Posted March 11 Posted March 11 The error message is from the Sparkle framework that Affinity uses to update its apps and usually appears because of what Garry was asking about, if the app being updated is actually in the DMG-mounted drive and not in Applications. This happens for many apps, not just Affinity, but the solution is easier than figuring out the problem: just download the full installer instead of using the updater. The problem will be avoided and it shouldn't happen again. You don't need to uninstall first. https://store.serif.com/update/macos/publisher/2/ Quote Download a free PDF manual for Affinity Publisher 2.6 Download a quick reference chart for Affinity's Special Characters Affinity 2.6 for macOS Sequoia 15.4, MacBook Pro (M4 Pro) and iPad Air (M2)
Brian Cross Posted March 12 Author Posted March 12 Hi Mike, Thanks for your "solution" which resolved the problem. I've noticed the same message with Affinity Photo and Designer so I will have to apply the same "solution" when an update becomes available for those two apps. Thanks again. Quote
