xgb Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 It seems to be an silly problem I'm workin’ on just here, but I can’t find out: as shown in attachment, I would like to add 3 objects finally to one. the left ist a simple square, the right one half of a circle - and the middle-part does have those curved 2 1/4 circle-part lines on top and base. if I try to connect these to build a closed (& finally filled) object the result is this useless filling of both two 1/4 circle-parts in there inner-circle side. Can’t understand which properties determine this - and how I'm able to prevent this? or, what is the mistake? thx! Quote
Hangman Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Hi @xgb and welcome to the forums, A couple of options... Create a closed shape from the two curved lines by joining their left and right edges. That will then apply the fill to the complete shape If you're using Affinity Designer, select all layers in the layers panel and use the Shape Builder tool Shapebuilder.mp4 George-Frazee 1 Quote Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse
xgb Posted December 20, 2024 Author Posted December 20, 2024 thanks a lot! yes i do use Affinity Designer but just a few weeks - came fro AI and FH. The working example you friendly gave does surprise, pretty working this Shape Builder tool. But unfortunately the sample doesn't work for me ... won’t get filled the middle part. Would you please show once more, but only this object with the curved lines, joining to get a closed form build, and colored? Quote
Hangman Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Hi @xgb, The Shape Builder tool will only be effective when combined with the adjacent shapes to the left and right... To fill the space between your two curves independently of the adjacent shapes you would need to adopt a different approach.... Select both curves in the Layers panel Select the Node tool from the tool panel Marque select the upper and lower left nodes Click the Join button in the context toolbar Marque select the upper and lower right nodes Click the Join button in the context toolbar Select each corner node in turn with the Node tool and Alt Click the outer Node handle to convert to a Sharp Node With the closed shape selected apply a fill colour With the adjacent closed shapes in play: Select all layers in the Layers panel Select the Shape Builder tool in the tools panel Click the '+' Action icon in the context toolbar to create a new shape from the selected areas Select a fill colour from the Colour panel The left and right closed objects will automatically be filled with the selected fill colour Move your mouse over the centre shape until you see the blue cross-hatching Apply a single mouse click to create a closed shape and fill it with your selected fill colour Shapebuilder v2.mp4 Quote Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse
xgb Posted December 21, 2024 Author Posted December 21, 2024 Wow! thanks again so much for this detailed help! I tried the first operation above, sometimes it does work, sometimes not - while using „designer“ on 3 platforms as mac 12.7, win 10 and iPad (the last one did offer the felt most reliability) altogether i have to continue exercise. Things to be mindful off When selecting the two Nodes to join with the Node tool ensure you have both layers selected in the Layers panel first. If you select the Node tool and marquee drag the two Nodes without the layers selected in the Layers panel all you are doing is selecting the layers themselves so selecting Join in the context toolbar won't do what you expect it to and you'll have to marquee select a second time to actually select the Nodes... The indicator to show the nodes are selected is the solid blue fill on the node itself Node Unselected - Left | Node Selected - Right Quote Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse
