This can be a user-wide setting, or a per-document setting.

Two colors, one for the even squares and one for the odd squares of the checkerboard.

Additionally, another color for the border of the document. It would also be great if the border was sharp, instead of semi-transparent.

This will be a good accessibility feature for users with photophobia as it is the best way to reduce the contrast between the checkerboard and the rest of the UI.

I am aware of workarounds, but they are far from optimal and it is the software that should adapt to the user, not the other way around. So please refrain from mentioning them.
