How to install application on new Mac vs running the disk image file?

Just got a new Mac and downloaded the software again, but it won't actually install - just runs from the dmg file. What am I doing wrong? I moved the dmg file to applications, and it will open, but doesn't install.

When you open the dmg you should now have a small Finder window open showing an icon for the App and an icon of your Applications folder.
Drag the icon of the App onto the icon of the Applications folder.
The OS will now start to install the App in your Applications folder.
Once correctly installed the dmg file can be moved to the Bin.
