How do I delete a selection without deleting the entire layer?

Using the path tool, I've created a selection.

I'd now like to delete the selected area from a layer.

With the selection active, I hit 'ctrl-x'.

This results in the layer being deleted.

How can I delete just the selected area from a layer, without deleting the layer itself?

The layer may be an Image Layer rather than a Pixel Layer. Right click the layer and click Rasterise, then try cutting/deleting the selection.
