@John of the P The safest bet for universal compatibility is to Export to JPG, set the Pixel format to RGB 8-bit, ICC profile to sRGB, resize to an acceptable size and Quality level (I often use 1600 pixels on the long side and 85% Quality which is still very high quality), and choose a Resample method, I usually use Bicubic. See screenshot below. For me, this is a good compromise between file size and quality. Depending on image content, sharpness, saturation, etc, this usually results in file sizes between about 300KB and 800KB. Image content can make a big difference in the final file size, even with identical export settings.

Pixel dimensions will vary depending on your intended use (email, printing, web posting, etc). If your pixel dimensions or file sizes are too big or small, adjust Size and Quality as necessary. You will see an estimate of the file size displayed in the Export window to guide you. In the screenshot below, estimated file size is 558kB for this image with these settings. This can help you decide to change settings, if needed.

8 bit sRGB will be viewed accurately on most devices, browsers, email programs, etc, because if they are not color managed (most are these days), they usually assume the file will be sRGB. If you have a very bright, saturated image, sRGB may clip some colors because it is a relatively small color space. I normally use Display P3 as my default color space on exports. This forum strips the embedded profile and assumes the file is sRGB, so it's always best to use sRGB for posts here (I usually forget and leave my exported files set to Display P3, which results in the colors looking a bit washed out on this forum. Duh! 😬)

sRGB is safe and works well most of the time, except on very colorful, super-saturated images.
