Is this possible with any of the Affinity applications?

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

Not sure how to phrase this question, but I need to make a series of images showcasing different designs on textile. Imagine superimposing design on t-shirts, as seen on several t-shirt outlets. In many such online shops, the designs are not just superimposed, but maybe also follows wrinkles and even angle of the object. Other similar applications would be to show a design (for example a logo) on cardboard boxes.

What I'd like to know is, would this be possible to do in a smart way in any of the Affinity applications? Like have a template that allows me to import an image and then it'll wrap around or imitate the object in question more or less seamlessly?

If yes, what is this type of process called and are there any resources out there where I can learn how to do this? I imagine this would be something to do in Designer 2, but don't have any experience with this application.

Thanks!

There are a bunch of T-Shirt design & mockup tutorials & videos on the net, just do a Google search after that topic and you will find many on Youtube & Co.

@v_kyr Oh, one follow up question, if you don't mind? For the use case and in your experience, which application would you suggest offers best fit and most flexibility to do this in? Photo or Designer?

Depends on what you've planned to deal most with, aka pixel/bitmap/raster images, or instead own vector based designs. - Affinity Photo is the one to go in case of working/manipulating/applying mostly pixel/bitmap images here. But if you instead work much more with own vector designs & drawings Affinity Designer would make more sense here.

@v_kyr Great input, thanks! I'll be dealing mostly with reusing a pixel/bitmap background and will be superimposing bitmap on top of that. My hope is that I can find some process that make is relatively easy to have the superimposed image align with the background image. Is it possible to make such a "recipe" that can be applied over an over, you think?

That's what mockups (...reusable templates) of T-Shirts etc. are usually meant for. Just give it an own try, download an Affinity Photo trial version, some T-Shirt etc. mockups & look at some of the above via links provided tutorials and give it a test run!

I took mockup more as a "design" before production, not that it had reusable properties.

You can alter/modify/recolor or exchange (add new) etc. objects (images or whatever) in mockups & used templates. Instead you can also place multiple objects inside which you then show/hide on demand in order to get different looks and so on.

I just had a look at a few videos (for reference, 1 & 2 & 3, in case someone will stumble on this thread in the future). The first one shows how to use an existing mockup and replace certain parts of it by changing the content of its embedded documents. The second show how to actually create and use embedded documents in a simple way. Also, it shows how to use a guideline to place the image in the correct position every time. The third goes further showcasing displacement.

My takeaway here is that I'll have to create the first image, add the image I want to superimpose as embedded document and then change properties like perspective, curves, blur, shadows, blend, color grade etc to make it look correct with the background. Once that is done, I should be able to replace the content of the embedded document for future images.

This use of embedded documents is a bit mind blowing to me, I love how reusable it is!

Yes embedding images & parts etc. is one possible approach here. Same as I've done for that mug one here ...
