Hello!

I've been happily using AP on my desktop, and then recently downloaded the latest version (which I now assume is V2) to my iPad and now I can't transfer my files back to AP Desktop because they are incompatible. I get the attached message. On further investigation this apparently means I need to Upgrade my AP desktop to V2. Ok fine. However, am I right in thinking I have to Upgrade to the WHOLE SUITE?! Including Design and Illustrator?! Is there (PLEASE!) somewhere an option to JUST upgrade Photo V2? Or at least a workaround where I can open my iPad files again?

Help me out here, maybe I'm just being stupid.

Cheers

Tom

Files saved in V2 are not compatible with V1, so yes, you'll need to upgrade your desktop Affinity applications, too.

You can just purchase and install Photo 2 on the desktop, but then your Designer and Publisher installation won't be compatible with it.

Hi Walt! Thanks for the reply.

I ONLY have Photo I don’t have the other two hence why I don’t want to have to download them.

so you’re saying that I can JUST download the upgrade for Photo? I couldn’t find it?

You can find Affinity Photo 2 in the Affinity Store, the Microsoft Store, or the Mac App Store.

It's a new purchase for you, not an update to your existing application.

So I wouldn’t get the 25% discount is that right?

That's correct. The discount is only for the Universal License.

Wait wait wait! V2 is $70?! and I'm sitting here with a useless affinity Photo that cost the same price?

Sorry Walt this is REALLY not aimed at you but honestly...

The whole reason I came away from Adobe was because I cannot afford the monthly fees but now it kind of feels like I've been conned into the same kind of system with albeit more spaced out payments. I'm not one to complain about paying for things that people have worked on really, I'm not, but if there exists a discount system it really would be nice to think it applied to ALL existing customers not just the top grade that can afford the full suite.

But what do I know, I'm just living in a country with raging inflation trying to keep up with pack.

All the best

You don't have to upgrade to V2. You can keep using V1. You just can't share native Affinity files between V2 and V1.

The issue seems to be that you want to use Photo on your iPad, and you do not have a license for Photo V1 there. Thus, your two choices should be:

  1. Return Photo 2 that you purchased for your iPad (if you purchased rather than using the Free Trial, and if Apple offers a return policy) and not use Photo on the iPad, or
  2. Also purchase V2 for your desktop.

You could have bought Photo V1 for, probably, $50 or so about 7 years ago (unless you would have purchased during a sale), and it would have cost you about $7 per year. That's far better than Adobe's subscription prices.

We don't know how long it will be before V3 of the Affinity applications come out, but it will probably be at least several years if they handle development as they did for V1. So, if you pay $70 today, and if V3 doesn't come out for 3 years, you'll pay about $23 per year. Still, far better (I think) than Adobe prices.

You could also wait for a sale, which is likely to offer 20% discounts on the individual products, too. We will probably not see anything as high as the 25% upgrade discount during a normal sale, nor ever as high as the 40% introductory price that was available for several months at the end of 2022 (until V3 comes out, whenever that may be).

In all honesty the issue is I'm not very satisfied with AP on iPad in general (I think maybe you yourself have kindly replied to a couple of my issues!) so this is just another little gripe to add to the list. It seems a bit duplicitous to not be clear and upfront about these issues on download (i.e. of the iPad version) and yes of course I get that in terms of value for money then Affinity beats Adobe but I come from an era of MANY years working with Adobe and just paying for the software up front (what heady days!) without any issues of backwards compatibility and I thought that here with Affinity something similar was going on. But it seems not.

ho hum

I think I will just migrate my iPad work to ProCreate for any hand drawn stuff and then continue with what I have of Affinity desktop and wait for some discounts I suppose.

Thanks again.

I see this thread has swiftly died a death without any real concrete acceptance that there might be a problem.

In the meantime I've just tried to open another quite important file that I've been working on for some time on the iPad (V2) on my Macbook (V1) and of course I can't!

You've really stitched me up here Affinity! Like I'd like to know if it is at all clear anywhere BEFORE downloading V2 that there will be an issue of backwards compatibility (i.e. you can't do it). Maybe it was written somewhere but the fact that I find myself in this situation might imply it could be a lot clearer.

Because it's not just Affinity, I've had to redownload things like True Grit on the iPad at another extra cost but since in it's current form Affinity on the iPad is of no use to me then it's quite a waste of money.

The solution to your problem is for you to purchase a V2 license for your Mac, too. V1 will not be able to Open your V2 files.

Actually, there is one additional solution: Install the 30-day free trial of V2 on your Mac. That will let you Open the files you saved on your iPad. Once you have Opened one of the files in the V2 application, select all the layers, Copy, and then paste into a new document in your V1 application (or, possibly, File > New from Clipboard). That will often work, though there is no guarantee if you used some function in V2 that is new/specific to V2.

Thanks Walt, I appreciate your efforts and yeah that might be a good workaround. Still a bit bummed out about the whole thing.

There's other issues I've raised with the iPad AP where I haven't really been given any good solutions.
