Currently I don't see how we can differentiate between multiple brushes and it feels a little cumbersome having to switch to the overlay panel each time to create a new overlay or switch between them.

In my opinion Lightroom tackles this in a good way by creating a small dot where you began the brush stroke. Alternatively Affinity Photo could highlight all brushstrokes made in an overlay when selecting the specific overlay on the right. Being able to rename a Brush Overlay would be an immense help too when digging up old work in the future.
