I'm maybe sidetracking the thread a little, but I would be curious to know how to work on the same document at the same time. I can imagine working on the same project – either by checking-in/out different documents being part of the same project, or separately working on different layers and then joining them together.

As for working on the same document, I've had some meetings where multiple participants were editing the same text document, and it was a hell. Changes happening everywhere, parts of text you could no longer find, because someone edited them while others where discussing about other parts…

I found it a mess. Which could be a reasonable workflow to make it work?

Affinity doesn't have collaboration features.

I've used the collaboration features of Microsoft and Google and I think they need more work. It worked okay in PowerPoint and Word which are relatively simple programs, but it was poorly thought out in Excel. Somebody would filter the spreadsheet and hide rows that I was working on. And sometimes you just had to stop because somebody else was editing the same thing you were editing.

A check in/out system avoids all this but then it's not pure collaboration. But for something as complex as a book I'd much rather know that only I was working on chapter 2 while you were the only one working on chapter 3. The new Books feature enables this sort of collaboration but Affinity doesn't have a check in/out system. However, you can simply tell your colleagues that you're working on chapter 2 and to leave it alone.

It's very typical of the software development world to use project management systems, that are not themselves part of the editors. Two free examples that come to my mind are OpenProject and Confluence.
