mandara Posted November 14, 2022 Posted November 14, 2022 hello. i have, for many years, used the pencil tool in adobe flash for my vector art (still using CS5 on an ancient imac). i find the pencil tool to be very pleasant to work with. i can easily delete unwanted parts of lines with a click and push and pull lines with little difficulty. it is also very easy to fill in whatever i've drawn with the paint bucket tool. i just got an ipad pro and purchased affinity designer and was hoping to have a similar experience but have instead found nothing but frustration. i've watched just about every affinity tutorial video and searched these forums for useful information but am still having trouble doing what i assumed would be simple tasks. basically i just want to draw things with the pencil tool and then fill in the lines i've drawn with color. it sounds very simple but in reality, it seems a lot more difficult than i expected. from reading these forums, i learned that i can use the expand stroke operation on my lines and then use add and divide under geometry and it sometimes works reasonably well. it's definitely not perfect, though. is this really the best way to turn my pencil drawings into colorable work? did flash spoil me and leave me unprepared for the harsh and complicated world of vector art? thank you for any tips and suggestions! Hi mandala, and apologies for such a late response. Vector art is more complicated and I am by no means an expert. I’ve found you need to close curves/lines so that you can control the fill which would otherwise fill across the end nodes. Switching to Node tool allows you to nudge the shape to fit. Another feature with vectors is the ability to clip or mask layers, a very useful technique when colouring in with fills. Quote M1 IPad Air 10.9/256GB lpadOS 17.1.1 Apple Pencil (2nd gen).
