Can anyone suggest a reason my background layer disappears when I apply an Affinity asset texture layer and Rasterize to Mask?

I've tried in Designer and Photo, atop existing background png image, atop a newly created shape in another file in case it needed to originate in the app, and by using Rasterize and Trim first.

TIA for any suggestions or tutorials on how to make this work correctly.

What result do you want to achieve? (Why “to mask”)?
A screen recording of steps would help.

It seems you placed a png file, probably resulting in image layer type. May add a rasterize step (not to mask)
