I've got a wee game engine animation project I'm working on which will be done in Spine and destined for Defold. As I wasn't entirely sure of the best way to move a composition + assets from Affinity Designer/Photo to Spine I did a quick search and ran across this post. It mentions "Update: We've reached out to the Affinity Designer guys and they are willing to add built-in support for tags! It's really great they are so responsive."

It took me a while to discover the existing Export Persona -> Slices -> Batch Builder -> Spine JSON setting and I was able to quickly move a simple test composition from Affinity Designer to Spine with all of the images appearing in the correct positions when imported.

I do have a couple of questions:

  1. Why is this wonderful feature so obscured? I couldn't find anything about it in the Affinity documentation. It was pure trial and error (along with actual desperate need) that eventually led me to discovering it buried deep within the Export Persona.
  2. Has the fore mentioned support for tags landed in a release yet (the thread mentioned it would definitely be post 1.9)? I'm wondering if it's at all (or one day will be) possible to define Spine hierarchies, draw orders, and skins from within Affinity that will be automatically reflected in Spine when re-exporting/importing?

I often see folks asking for an Affinity animation application (whatever that would be), but when I see new tools for creating animations such Spine, Rive and Cavalry (and Blender) I'd much rather have the Affinity apps work as natural and indispensable complements to these applications, especially as there seems to be an increasing trend towards using realtime (game) engines over traditional tools and pipelines.

Hi Bryan,

I'm sorry you feel the feature was hidden in some way admittedly the help doesn't return any results when you search for JSON or Batch builder so this could be improved, there is a short description of the batch builder on the Slices Panel page however. As far as I'm aware we still don't support tagging I'm afraid.

Thanks
Callum
