I can't stand Designer, it is lagging so much with so many slow downs that it is really annoying to work with. It has 10x less features than Illustrator and it still slow. Why? I was so happy to have alternative to Ai but it seems that It was a mistake. Font changing time is ridiculous. It really makes me nervous.

Hi @zayca,

Our sincerest apologies for the delayed response here!

We're going to need more information to assist - can you please confirm for me:

  • Are you running Designer on Mac, Windows or iPad?
  • What is the model/specs of this device?
  • Does the app 'lag' when doing specific actions, or seemingly with any action?
  • How many fonts do you have installed currently? (if known)

Many thanks in advance :)

System - Windows 10.

Specs are i7 6700k, gtx 970, 16 gb ram ddr4, ssd 256. I have many but it is not huge amount, maybe 200-300. Pretty old pc but it works with ie Blender just fine and other 2D software without issues.
I have many slowdowns, designer  just stop working for 20-30 seconds after launch and doing sone basic operations or undos. I find affinity software pretty slow and not responsive especially considering features.

I'm in the same boat zayca and Dan C. I've just started using Designer and I'm having some big lag issues too.

I even reformatted my laptop in case I had some weird stuff happening but no good. It just lags bad on text and selecting from one thing to another. One example is when I zoom out I have to press the shortcut keys 3-4 times until it finally activates. I have minimal fonts installed as I've just refreshed the laptop.

I'm wondering if it just doesn't like working from an original AI file or is my laptop just not gutsy enough.

AMD Ryzen 5 4600HS
RAM 16.0 GB
GPU Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti
SSD 512GB

Hi @j0hnj0hns,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums and I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble!

From your screenshot, I can see the application is detecting both your Nvidia dedicated GPU and your AMD integrated GPU (which is part of your CPU, aka an 'APU') and this is likely causing 'crossed wires' which is slowing the application. I'll be sure to pass your specs through to our QA/dev team, to see if this can be improved for similar machines in the future.

To resolve this issue for you now, can you please try unticking Hardware Acceleration for me, then restart the app as prompted and try zooming/selecting text once again - does this respond better for you please? :)

Edit - Can you also please confirm the driver version you're using for your 1650ti for me? Many thanks!

Well look at that! I think you might be a bit of champion Dan C! I turned off hardware acceleration and so far things seem OK. I'll keep an eye on things as the day goes on.

My Nvidia driver version is 457.63. It's hassling me to upgrade to the latest and greatest at the moment but I got trust issues with Nvidia and AMD so I'll wait a bit.

Thanks for the help.

That's great to hear, many thanks for letting me know and for confirming the driver version for me - it's certainly appreciated!

I hope you do not encounter any further slow-downs, but if you do please don't hesitate to let us know :)
