Unable to load Document (after import of .eps file) (iPad OS)

Recommended Posts

[Specs: iPad Pro 2018 - iPad OS 14.4 - Affinity Designer 1.9.7]

I spent roughly 20 hours on a document, in which I imported an .eps file that was then embedded into the document. I was able to edit the embedded .eps to my wishes. After I edited it, went back to the document itself where I positioned it to its designated place, I exited the document too (go-back arrow, upper left). Shortly after that, without closing the app, I was not able to reopen the document. When tapping on it, a note appears: Unable to load document (translated from German - hope it’s the native wording).

I‘m not able to duplicate the document. I did not save the document as parallel .eps or whatsoever. Closing and reopening the app won’t solve the issue. As well as  switching the iPad off and on again.

I‘m a bit lost here and would like to share more Information if needed. Please tell me my work isn’t gone to waste :(

Thanks sincerely,

Hi schutzraum,

This is an issue we're aware of and happens when you attempt to edit an embedded object instead an existing document and the app is then forced to return to the document selection screen whilst you were in the embedded document. This can happen in the following two ways that we're aware of (see below).

Unfortunately this does render the document inaccessible. However you could try using a utility called 'iMazing' to gain access to the Autosave folder within our actual app. This has been outlined by Gabe here. The iMazing website does appear to list a Windows version but I haven't used this. I did try it on my Mac and I was able to access one of the files that was affected by my receipe below.

Method 1 - Cmd+W to close using Keyboard Cover

  1. Start a new document
  2. Document > Place Image > From Cloud and select an AFdesign file
  3. Drag to place the file
  4. Double tap to edit it
  5. make a change and then press Cmd+W on the keyboard
    •  Document is returned to the home screen
  6. Tap the document to open it
    •  Document will no longer open

Method 2 - Autosave and App Quit

  1. Ensure Autosave is set to 30s (makes it quicker to reproduce)
  2. Start a new document
  3. Document > Place Image > From Cloud and select an AFdesign file
  4. Drag to place the file
  5. Double tap to edit it
  6. make some changes and give it enough time for Autosave to have kicked in
  7. Access the app screen (drag up from the bottom slowly on a home button-less iPad) and swipe up to close Designer
  8. Reopen Designer and try to open the document
    •  Document will fail to load.

The issue "If a document is closed on the iPad whilst editing an embedded file it will cause the document to fail to open again" (REF: AFD-5299) has been fixed by the developers in internal build "".
This fix should soon be available as a customer beta and is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Serif Info Bot to notify us.
