This is a must, I think. Levels and curves at least, along with Gaussian blur, is the bare minimum for adjusting the luminosity areas of a mask.

There are so many different ways how to do all this in APhoto. Starting from   that  curves and levels  adjustment layer have "alpha" in drop down list  that makes them influence your mask  only.     Plus "erase"  blend mode  you can use as a mask.     Plus "blend if"  curves that can make you masks working only for certain pixels.   Plus  you can do a whole stack of gazillion layers  or  embedded doc with its own gazillion masks and layers  as your mask.    Plus you can use a groups as a mask and "release" it before editing.     All this  completely non destructive.

But the "alpha"  in levels/curves for your mask is probably simplest way.

I would love  blur FX working only on a layer alpha although.  Or rather glow fx working for alpha   without all the hassle of making the masks at all.     Like in Xara   or long ago extinct Expression.

Yes....more way, but this is the simples. Other ways adds more layers, groups or "others".....
