Layer click to zoom and selection issues

Recommended Posts

I am new to Affinity Designer and there are a couple of things which I am really struggling with. The first is clicking on items in the layers palette sometimes automatically triggers a zoom to the object. I really want to disable this. I am editing variations of an item on a single page so I am constantly zooming out to check that I have selected the correct object. I cannot find a way to switch this off - is there a way to do this please?

My second issue is a bit more serious and I cannot determine if this is  Affinity issue or if it is caused by software conflicts. the issue I am experiencing is that clicking on the object selector arrow on the top left of the screen (black arrow) does not always seem to work. I seem to have to click on it several times before it selects. This also happens with other menu items but to a lesser extent. I do not have this issue with other software on my machine, but I winder if it is a conflict caused by other software.

I am on a Mac running the latest version of Catalina, and I am also running Wacom Intuos 4 tablet (with the latest driver) AND a 3DConnexion Cadmouse again with the latest driver. All are running on Bluetooth. I create artwork in a vector package like AD (previously Adobe Illustrator) and then use 3D software (Fusion 360) to convert to 3D and machine the work in 3 dimensions. If anyone has any suggestions/experience of this I would be really grateful.

Hi @Gnasher42,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Regarding your questions:
1. This only happens if you double-click the layer's thumbnail in the Layers panel. A single click in the thumbnail or anywhere on the layer will select the object without zooming. There's no way to turn this off but it shouldn't happen that frequently unless somehow the mouse, wacom (whatever) is performing a double-click when should be doing a single-click.
2. Do you experience these issues with all input devices (the 3DConnexion Cadmouse, Wacom, trackpad if you are using a laptop, or it's just with one specifically?

The first issue happens to me too. And I think this is quite new because I use AD now for a couple of years and never experienced it.

The thing I noticed is, that it doesn't happen only when clicking the thumbnail. It also happens when clicking above/below the label.

So when I want to change the name of the label and I'm not 100% exactly above the text, the action will trigger a zoom to the component.

This annoys so much! Please put it back to thumbnail only. 🙏

I thought I would follow up with where I have got to with this issue, perhaps to help anyone who has similar issues. Following up from MEB's suggestion that there is a double click happening hone there should only be a single click, I further investigated the hardware. Swapping back to an Apple Magic Mouse and the Wacom tablet and disabling the 3Dconnexion mouse at least partially resolved the issue. Affinity Designer was working fine but I was still having problems with other applications with missed mouse clicks. Web searches on the 3DConnexion mouse suggests that there have been problems with this issue in the past. I contacted 3Dconnexion and they directed me to upgrade the firmware in the mouse - which can ONLY be done using a Windows computer. I am a Mac user but, fortunately (or unfortunately) I also use a windows installation on the Mac and completed the upgrade that way. This has resolved many of the issues with AD and with other software but I was still getting weird random missed clicks and occasional double clicks when there should not be.

Final result: disconnect 3Dconnexion mouse and uninstall driver software. Result: Working Affinity and 3D software (Fusion 360) and no more problems. I have found that a combination of Apple Trackpad and Magic Mouse works fine with my 3D software and my very old Wacom Intuos 4 tablet plays very nicely indeed with Affinity software!

No worries @Gnasher42. Glad to know you have solved the issue. Thank you for sharing the details/solution with us.

Hi @Bumblebee31,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Can you give us a few more details please? What input device are you using while working in Affinity - mouse, trackpad, pen&tablet? On what OS? Are you using any third party menu utilities that may interfere with the mouse? If using a mouse have you checked the double-click speed in the system preferences?
