Removing Background from .EPS

Recommended Posts

Hi

I apologise for what is I am sure a rather amateurish question. I am trying to create some graphics for a project I am developing and have been getting .EPS files from shutterstock. I got Affinity Design to edit these images which I am slowly getting my head around but what I cannot work out  how to save an image without a background - so it can be placed on any background. Thanks for any pointers on this.

Hi @DominicLondon,

Welcome to the forums :)

Firstly, it would help to see the document/object you're looking to export without a background, could you please provide a screenshot of your Affinity document, with the Layers Studio showing?

Secondly, what format are you looking to export/save to? Do you need a Vector format with a transparent background, such as an SVG, or an image with a transparent background, such as a PNG?

Are you looking to save this for future use in Affinity only, or for use in other apps/documents also?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Dan.

Images attached. I am trying to save it with a transparent background so I can then put it on any background I want - I am working on a book so trying to put graphics on full colour pages and do not want them sitting in their backgrounds if that makes sense. This image - all I want are the coloured heads without the white background. I have tried deleting the white background and if you look at the layers - the first layer is now a blue head and the white background is no longer there. I have saved in PNG but when I position in a program it has a white background always.

Thanks for confirming that for me!

Can you possibly provide a link to, or upload here the EPS file in question, so that I can try editing this here?

It looks as though the curve layers should be independent, with no background.

Could you please provide a screenshot of your PNG export settings from Affinity?

What app are you opening these PNGs in, once exported?

Many thanks once again :)

My apologies for the delayed reply here and many thanks for the file provided!

After opening this document in Affinity Designer, I opened the Layers Studio and selected all the curves that make up the lightbulb/heads and grouped these together.

I then moved this group out of the layer it was nested in, and deleted the layer as these objects were no longer needed.

Now, with the group selected, you can export to PNG without a background, producing the image you require. Please see the screen recording of this below -

I dont think Affinity is made for amateurs like me. It is far from intuitive or maybe some of the basics are hard to grasp.

Sorry to hear you feel this way, have you tried checking out our tutorials for the app?

I hope this helps!

Hey Dan - that video was amazing. Thanks. I have got a long way but I cannot get beyond this point. I took a pic. So I have created the final merged group (I used another image to test) but then I cannot move it above to the top of the hierarchy. It just will not move. One thing I can see that is different is that I have the lock / unlock symbol next too all my layers and yours did not - otherwise I cannot work out why I cannot move the newly formed group to the top before exporting without the background.

No problem at all, happy to help :)

If you're referring to the group layer highlighted in the screenshot below, then this won't move due to the layer being Locked (the Padlock icon you're seeing) -

Please select this Group layer, then click the '3 tiered' menu option in the top right of the Layers Studio (highlighted above) - one of the options in this menu will be Unlock, select this and you should then find you're able to move your group as required :)
