Data recovery after crashing?

Recommended Posts

I was editing a flyer using Designer on my iMac. I switched a few times between Designer and Photo without an issue.

But later, I wanted switched to Publisher because I needed to do some text editing, and Publisher crashed upon opening. The file was gone?

The file didn't appear on Publisher before it crashed, but it already "left" Designer, so when I went back to Designer I faced a blank interface.

The funny thing is, I didn't save my work for 2 hours, and I couldn't find a temporarily saved file or a recovery option.

Is there somewhere I can recover a file in this situation? Or some mechanism to prevent this kind of disaster from happening (besides me saving my file more often)?

If not, I'd like to suggest that at least the file should not be closed in the first program (in my case, Designer) until it made sure the second program (Publisher) successfully opened the file.

Alternatively it could save a backup, or force the user to save the file before they can switch between programs.

Hi @alvision,

Welcome to the forums :)

I'm very sorry to hear this, it certainly isn't something that's reported often so we're going to need more information to investigate.

Firstly we always recommend regular saving, as this is the best 'defence' in file recovery. There certainly may be an auto save file for your Designer document, unfortunately as Designer doesn't recognise that Publisher did not receive the file, it has not automatically offered you this recovery option - however we can hopefully recover this manually.

Can you please confirm for me, did you purchase the app through the Mac App Store, or the Affinity Store? This will affect the location of the auto save files.

Many thanks in advance!

Many thanks for letting me know and I'm sorry to hear you had to recreate the document.

The auto save files can be found in the below location -

These will not be open-able in Affinity by default, however you can simply change the file format of any auto save files to .afdesign and the documents will be open-able in your app. I hope this helps!
