SVG creation

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I'm new to Affinity Designer. I tried to create a Logo, what worked well. Now my problem: Is it possible to create real SVG images? If I export a svg it's just a svg with inlined png. Anything I can do to create a real svg or is this the only possible solution?

Best regards,

Dominik

I'm not aware of "real SVG" as a format. SVG stands for "Scaleable Vector Graphics".

The word "Vector" is the key here. Vector means: line only... not photos (PNGs, JPEGS, tiffs, etc) which are not vector, but something called "raster" instead.

Think pixels vs lines. SVG is dedicated to lines. It's why it's "scaleable" because lines never go 'fuzzy' like pixels can do when enlarged too much.

My understanding is that SVG does not 'do' images. SVG "images" are always line drawings.

Try a PDF instead, that'll cope with both.

Though I'd counsel you to be wary of enlarging the logo if it's got a raster file (PNG etc.,) in it. If the logo is for someone else, definitely tell the person you're giving it to that they should avoid trying to use the logo at a large size.

Words are crude implements, difficult to get perfect, easy to get tied in knots with, and often - usually - misunderstood, which is why 'tolarence' is the best word of all.

The word "professional" fits us all - amateur, semi-pro, beginner, advanced, middle, beyond it all, and on....., because professionals are tolerant.

I know what a svg is normally. That's my problem. My problem is, my exported svg isn't composed by paths and symbols, it just contains a base64 representation of a png. I don't know what I've done that it's like that. I want a svg to use on a website.

Apologies @Dominik P. You never know how much people know here, if you follow.

@stokerg beat me to it.

Yes, most drop-show filters produce a raster element.

You can always check by looking at "outlines" mode (navigator). If you can't see the element as an outline, then it's a raster. Things can pass this test and still be a problem, though.

Glad you've got it sorted.
